The Phillies will name Angels assistant Matt Klentak as their next GM, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweets. Yesterday, it emerged that Klentak was a finalist for the job, along with Chaim Bloom of the Rays and Dan Kantrovitz of the Athletics. As MLB.com?s Todd Zolecki noted, all three were candidates in their 30s with Ivy League and analytics backgrounds.

Klentak began working in the Rockies baseball operations department soon after graduating from Dartmouth with an economics degree. He then worked in labor relations for MLB for several seasons. He then became director of baseball operations for the Orioles, where he worked under current Phillies president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail.

“Matt brings so much to the table,” said then-Angels GM Jerry Dipoto. “Matt understands the inner workings of baseball from the field to the finance. He understands baseball from the staff in the clubhouse to the players on the field to how to communicate back and forth with a finance department and ownership

Obviously.

I wish people would stop interviewing, and talking about, Kim Ng. She's never going to get hired and it's clearly a waste of her time when they call her in for a token interview.

She resigned as Assistant General Manager and Vice President of the New York Yankees in 2001 and one month later, she joined the Los Angeles Dodgers as Vice President and Assistant General Manager.

In 2005, Ng was interviewed for the vacant position of Dodgers general manager. No female has ever been a GM in any major sport. The Dodgers hired Ned Colletti as their GM, who immediately kept Ng on as his assistant. In 2008, she was interviewed for the general manager position with the Seattle Mariners, but the position went to Jack Zduriencik. In 2009, she interviewed for the San Diego Padres' General Manager position, which went to Jed Hoyer. On March 8, 2011, Ng announced that she was leaving the Dodgers to take on the position of "Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations" for Major League Baseball, where she would report to former Dodgers manager Joe Torre. In October 2011, she interviewed for the Los Angeles Angels general manager position but the Angels hired Jerry Dipoto. In July 2014, Ng interviewed for the Padres' GM position, and was one of four finalists for the position. The Padres hired A.J. Preller. The Philadelphia Phillies organization is currently giving serious consideration to Ng to become their next General Manager and the first female General Manager in the history of professional sports.
