Rumor: Orioles to Sign Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Wieters not to return?)

This. It is a violation of board rules to lie. And we do not recognize ANY member as an insider when it comes to negotiated circumstances. Quite frankly, there are none.

People are free to post what they want. Other people have every right to believe or not to believe what they want. the only time it becomes an issue is if we feel a poster is deliberately trying to speared false information.

That said, let's have fun with this stuff. It should be an active offseason.

Perfect.

Given that this site has played host to a few hundred words detailing why the Red Sox shouldn't bring him back, we certainly can't pretend the feeling is mutual. Even in the wake of the Hanigan injury, Saltalamacchia just isn't a good fit for this team. On the field, Saltalamacchia was frustrating, to say the least, between his poor defense and his inability to make full use of his power due to his tendency to swing at just about anything thrown his way. Even his best season, buoyed as it was by a .372 BABIP, ended with him benched in favor of David Ross for the most important games of the year.

And yet...somehow it seems a shame that there's no place for him here. As frustrating as he was, Saltalamacchia was also easy to cheer for. There's a certain goofiness about him that seems like it would have been at home with the 2004 team (and, granted, did not exactly set him apart from the 2013 edition). Saltalamacchia is the player you wish was better not just because that would help the team, but because it would make it easier to justify keeping him around.

It's about expectations. We're talking about a 2nd/3rd string catcher making the minimum rather than the 2014 Salty that signed a 3 year / $21 million contract.

My first thought was "okay, if they're signing Saltalamacchia then they're definitely slapping Wieters with the QO." No messing around, no wondering if we'll insult him, just getting max value out of their Boras client. If by some bizarre set of circumstances Wieters accepts you trade him.

Totally agree. If Wieters accepts it, you've still got options.

Can we please change the thread title in parenthesis. "Not even an option" is confusing given the MLB language.

If the guy has an inside source then that's cool and thank you. But if not this isn't that big of a deal. Connoly just gave us a 1/10 chance to bring MW back. I'd say most informed O's fan have accepted that reality. So why wouldn't the team bring another C to ST? I could see us signing Salty and still signing a vet or two, to keep in AAA as depth.

This fits would I've been thinking we should do. Pay for quality(Davis) and if you're going to take a flyer on a guy do it at the min level. No dead money this year. Worley and Salty fit the mold of cheap risks.

Like I said guys take it with a grain of salt... I have no interest in being an insider lol. Just trying to pass along something I heard. I will probably never in my life hear something like this again no intention. Like I said I had my fun in the NFL just trying to pass along something that was interesting.

Like Tony said, fun to pass it on and conjecture what it might mean.

Is it possible that Wieters has given the O's assurances that he will turn down a QO? I realize that it's not in his narrow short-term self-interest to give such assurances, but I get the sense that MW respects the organization and I could see him doing it as a gesture of respect and good will.

I doubt Wieters is doing any talking right now. Most Boras clients let him be the exclusive mouthpiece in anything regarding negotiations.

No former Orioles represented by Scott Boras will speak to any Oriole management again until after his next deal is agreed to. With whoever it is with. None of them will do any working out other than light cardio until that physical is complete either.

    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
