Is the head-to-head Defensive Multiplier a perfect methodology? As with any major league club, or any metric, the answer is of course not. A 100% sample would make me feel more comfortable, for starters. This is more of a macro-type method ? in contrast to the micro-type, fielder-specific methods publicly available here and elsewhere.

Why is that, returning essentially the same team? JJ Hardy missed 1/3 of the season and that hurt us but I can't think of too many other spots where we could expect a drop off in defense. Machado really struggled with errors the first month of the season, but I think he recovered to put up a solid dWAR.

Schoop missed close to 1/2 the season.

Hardy and Schoop both missed a lot of time and that's up the middle D. AJ missed more than usual too. Both COF positions where sub par.

Schoop's numbers were way down. Hardy's and Jones' were good, but down. As you noted, the corner OF defense was not good at all.

On a related topic... From a science project perspective it was nice to see Nick's metrics carry over to Atlanta. Data point to help debunk the idea that OPACY horribly distorts OF defensive metrics.
