How much does it matter?

Imagine you are Chris Davis. Imagine you play another 7-9 years and hit another 230-ish dingers... not exactly HOF numbers, but you'll get some votes.

With that context, which would you rather choose today:

8 years and $192m ($24m aav) in a big market, playing big chunks of your career with three teams, riding off into the sunset with a bunch of extra cash but no real legacy beyond being a Dave Kingman type.

...or...

7 years and $161m ($23m aav) with the O's, pretty much only known as an Oriole, your number is retired, you're in the O's HOF (might be anyway), local legend, maybe a statue, and a lifetime being identified with one team and one city.

Which would you choose? Which would Davis pick?

Chris Davis answered that question for himself when he chose Boras to represent him.

So, you want to know if Davis is Bud Fox, or Gordon Gekko?

If I had to guess, I would say that he's probably Gekko. As mdbdotcom stated, just the fact that Boras is his agent is an indication of where his priorities lie.

I agree with this! Most guys who pick Boras pick him for one reason. The biggest contract possible. Uniform and city are a distant second and third.

I think some of the kids pick him because there is a perception that he gets the best guys, so if you sign with him you must be one of the best guys.

Now someone like Chen or Britton, who makes the switch to him late in the game, then I completely agree with you.

He picked. Scott. You employ him to show, you, the money.

I would take the $192M. Even though either amount sets me up for life, I could use the extra $32M for a variety of charitable causes that are of personal concern. You can do a lot of good things with $32M.

He was busted for PEDs twice. Possible twice during our World Series year.

That is a good counterpoint. We could maybe have a faint glimmer of hope with Davis since he does fall in with the first group. But it is faint, as the last big client I can remember Boras letting sign with his original team is Weaver.

I'm probably wrong about that as I haven't paid near as much attention to baseball in the last five years as I used to.
