Britton's trade value

I also wonder, if the Astros are contending in July and we are not, I wonder what Britton's value would be at that point. Still pretty high I would think.

And if Britton is healthy and effective. And depending on what other bullpen arms are available. And assuming someone like McCullers hasn't been converted into a dominant late-inning guy.

Until the Os are not contenders, they will act like they are. Whether folks on a message board like that fact or not. I'm not saying it is the smartest route to success, but the patch, repair, and regrow approach is a legitimate business model if not the most attractive.

I'm not sure trading Britton is necessarily acting like we aren't contenders. Even contenders should sell high when the situation is right.

It would be a bad move to trade Zack Britton and it would be wise to have a legit

closer, that's why everyone wants him. The O's would really have to be smart before

they trade someone like Britton.

If we are going to be as bad as you seem to think we will be, why do we need a good closer?

You seem to be waging quite an argument with yourself.

"Papelbon recently altered the teams on his no-trade list, reports James Wagner of the Washington Post. Though he doesn’t have specifics on the updated list, Wagner points out that the no-trade clause makes it more difficult to move Papelbon than Storen, who also has just one year of team control remaining at a cheaper rate than that of Papelbon. GM Mike Rizzo has said he doesn’t feel the need to trade either reliever unless he gets a sound return, but as Wagner notes, that could just be an attempt at preserving some trade value." mlbtraderumors.com

And we are only 10 days away from non-tenders becoming free agents. Could be some good pickings there.

From Roch's blog: "I heard a rumor over the weekend that the Orioles have talked about a deal that would send closer Zach Britton to the Padres, bringing a starting pitcher and outfielder in return. The plan also would call for Kevin Gausman to be converted to closer." He then says in the comments that is was Ross and Kemp with the O's taking all of Kemp's salary.

Even with the Dodgers kicking in $3.5 million of Kemp's salary (assuming that comes along with him), that's $18.25 million for a DH.

As for the Gausman part, I don't see why they would move him to closer unless they think it is unlikely that he will become the TOR they'd hoped.
