Ortiz retiring, will the Orioles "honor" him?

I can't stand it when people call Jeter a "class act." Ortiz is one of the best power hitters I've ever seen. The reasons people have for hating him strike me as incredibly juvenile.

I think WAR significantly undervalues DHs.

I don't think Jeter is classy. And his comp for HOF cred is Bobby Grich. Ortiz was a power hitter made for his park. It is really good that he never had to play a position. He aged well through chemistry. I think he has a foul personality. Much like his doppelganger, J.D. Drew.

There were players prior to 1973 who certainly appeared to be very good MLB hitters who spent their careers pinch hitting or playing in the minors because they fielded like David Ortiz. Who's that guy who hit like 63 homers for the IL Orioles about 1935? Played one year in the majors and hit well. Had many seasons like that 63 Homer season in AAA. If there was a DH then he might have looked similar to Ortiz.

Buzz Arlett. .925 OPS as a 32-year-old MLB rookie in 1931. 2.8 RWAR. Only MLB PAs that year because he supposedly couldn't field at all.

Edit: The old noggin is failing me. Arlett had 54 homers for the '32 Orioles the year after his one-year MLB career. Joe Hauser, another epic minor league slugger, had 63 for the '30 Orioles.

Unless Drew was a really good OFer, I'll generally take the career 139 OPS+ DH over the career 125 OPS+ corner OFer.

Sure. He's better. Close though. Maybe Drew would have been healthier and better had he sat on the bench as well.

Making that call would be a good job for a systematic framework to consistently weigh the various aspects of players' production.

Whatever happened to just letting your own fans honor and applaud you with a day or whatever? Unless they do something that truly changes the game, I just don't get it. And Ortiz? God, no! Just pass.

It started when they started announcing their retirements before their final season even starts.

Dad worked the world baseball classic back in 2008 or some time around that, and was assigned to the Dominican team, and he said that Big Papi was the nicest player he dealt with, and was a truly nice guy.

It would be refreshing if a guy like this who has made 150 million in salary alone, let alone marketing and investment deals, if their tour consisted of buying a dog or soda for every fan in every stadium he visits. About 50,000 bucks a stadium give or take, but good will= priceless.
