Projected Payroll 2016 Orioles -- Up to this Moment

For those who want to play GM, here's the current projected team payroll. I'm dealing only with the "active" roster; but the O's will have pay obligations for players on the 40 man roster. I'll try to keep this up to date through opening day (all help appreciated).

To be on this list, the player must:

Be on the 40 man roster

Be under contract/control or without remaining options

Have had MLB playing time in 2015

All of the latest transactions, tenders, and non-tenders are included. Salaries are displayed as rounded to the nearest $100k, but the total is accurate to 2 decimal places. Projections for those under contract are from the Baseball Prospectus Compensation Website. Arbitration projections are from the MLB Trade Rumors Website.

The minimum salary was $507,500 in 2015. There will be an inflation adjustment for 2016; the minimum for 2016 has yet to be announced but is expected to be around $515,000.

As with virtually all team payroll tabulations on the web, my total payroll figure does not reflect any deduction for deferred salaries.

To force the roster to 25, I listed 5 outfielders. However, it's not likely that we'll start the season with 5 right-handed hitters for the pastoral positions. In fact, as it currently stands, the most frequent starting nine, likely has only 2 batters, Wieters and Paredes, capable of hitting from the left side (and, for one them, "capable" may be hyperbole:rofl:). Well PA needs to open up that MASN money for this year because we need to add...

Davis 6/140 Only 20 million in 1st year

Gallardo 4/56 Only 10 million in 1st year

P.Alvarez 1/6

So we're basically going to need a $140 million payroll in 2016. Largely because of MW accepting the QO. This is what it would take to win the AL East.

My guess on next moves:

O's sign O'Day 4/35 (8m in 2016)

O's trade Britton for lefty OFers

O's choose between Davis and Pedro Alvarez. They bid up to 6/120 on Davis. If it goes passed that they turn to Alvarez. They prefer Davis. Alvarez 3/18. 5m in 2016

O's pursue Kazmir, Gallardo and Leake. They sign one. 4/52. 11m paid in 2016.

Rule 5 guy to be selected next week. Probably an OFer.

Hmm, I'd say you're close.

I'm not sold they'll go that high on O'Day. Kinda defeats the purpose of moving Britton with his escalating salary if you pay another reliever big money.

Yeah, the Orioles prefer Davis up to a point, then they prefer Alvarez. I think a lot of the Orioles preference of Davis is lip service, but I'm ok with that.

I hope the only guy out they get of the the three pitchers you mentioned is Kazmir.

Rule 5, Jabari Blash OF Seattle....hopefully he's still around when the Orioles select.

Davis backloaded 17 M

LeaKe 12 M

Span 9 M.

O'Day 8 M

I still like Kazmir better and not so hot on Span .....if we add Kazmir, resign Davis and ODay (which we seem pretty serious about), I'd be pretty happy ...I'm not a fan of Span and his injuries. I'd go after the Korean outfielder that's still on the board Hyun Soo.

Agree with a lot. However, the O's will not trade Britton. No way they are signing O'Day to that contract. If they offered 4 years it was because the AAV was lower than his 3 year offers. I would guess a max offer of 4/28.

I think if they can bring back Davis and do the rest we could be a serious contender. (I will caveat that with Tillman must significantly better)

I have to agree on ODay and believe he will come back for that.

I personally do not think hoping for Tillman to be better is too much of a stretch, considering he has been better in the past. It is not quite hoping for improvement to levels above past performance (or never achieved).

Personally, I am not hoping for Tillman to be better, I am expecting it.

His peripherals have never been too good so I'm still skeptical. Hope you're right.

That's a fair point. My only real point was to separate it from pie in the sky versions of hoping for/counting on improvement for X player. I just think there is a difference between the two, that is all. Sometimes around here I feel that there is a notion that a player with a good year in 20X1 is assumed to regress in 20X2, while a player who slumps is at his new normal and will be there forever (see Chris Davis in 2014). Tillman looked off, despite the perifs from prior years (out of shape in camp, etc.), so I don't think a bounce-back is too far out there.

Thanks for the update. Already at $106M puts it in perspective. I think people are nuts if they are expecting Davis (possibly O'Day) and a SP in the Leake/Kazmir range.

I just hope if Duquette is trying to go for it this year that it is with guys like Trumbo who won't cost any draft picks, prospects, or long term commitments. You look at where we are now in payroll and the holes that we still need to fill and I just don't think this is the year to go for it.
