Could Cliff Lee be our Lefty?

I still find it weird that of the four starters who won 20 games in the same season -- Palmer, McNally, Cuellar, and Dobson -- Palmer has been the only one still living since 2010.

I played softball in the 80's with a guy named Mike Herson. He was our shortstop, but he had been a SP that was pretty good at Rochester at the time you are talking about. He would tell the story of going up to Weaver during spring training and saying "Come on, Earl, It is time to bring me up. I don't need to prove anything more at Rochester, do I?"

He said Weaver took him aside and pointed one by one at the Orioles' four SPs, saying, "See that guy? That's Jim Palmer. Over there is Mike Cuellar. That's Pat Dobson there. And that guy there is Dave McNally. Now, son, which one should I send down to Rochester so I can bring you up?"

Mike said that's when he knew he needed to find a different line of work. LOL

Sounds like Flanagan talking about his first day of basketball practice at UMass. Walked into the gym, say Dr. J warming up, and knew his future was in baseball.

He's almost 40, and he's got that huge contract that the Phillies gave him and many of those players that are now needing to retire like Ryan Howard

That contract is over.

He's 37.

Ryan Howard has proven he is washed up with poor performance on the field. Lee hasn't.

Some team is going to take a chance on him fairly cheaply by today's standards.

He may be done due to the injury and may never win another game in the majors. But he may have a year or two of good pitching left in his arm.

I have no idea what he's going to get but I think he's worth looking at.

I imagine we would be a last resort destination. Any pitcher with injury concerns will probably think twice before taking an Orioles physical and with teams like The Braves and Brewers who could benefit and not be adverse to risk I don't see why Lee would willingly choose Baltimore.

I would welcome it though, just don't think it's gonna happen.

Are you crazy? Cliff Lee would never go to the Braves. The guy has made $143 million in his career. He isnt' coming back to make money. I assume he wants to be on a winner.

He's old and past his prime. How he's not retired is beyond me
The Orioles swim in that pool.

Do they? Not so much in the last couple of years. The Orioles didn't have any players older than 32 on the roster in 2015, and nobody older than 33 in 2014.

Probably the last old-and-past-his-prime acquisition Duquette made who spent time on the O's roster was Freddy Garcia in 2013.

In 2014, the Orioles gave Johan Santana a $3m look; he was 35 at the time.

    • So since Westburg is apparently still ROY eligible, Cowser and Westburg may project to be the best rookie combination since Fred Lynn and Jim Rice in 1975?
    • There were several and I was one them. I'm  on record as saying I was one of his biggest Apologists . You should feel good about yourself as you were able to see that Means would be imploding before our very eyes( which was an opinion or a guess, which is what I did) as far as feeling bad for me? Dont I'm plenty good enough to know I wont be able to guess right every time
    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
