It's what they've done so far, which is what this thread is about.

Actually, the thread is about how they have done so far, not that it should be expected that all moves for the off-season should be made by now. The Orioles seem to be moving toward filling the hole in the rotation, and I really think that they will. Don't you?

They certainly have time to fill the hole. But I'm not convinced that they're moving toward doing so. They seem to be balking at the price tag for pretty much every significant FA starter.

How do they seem to be moving forward with SP? I mean we hear "the Orioles are interested in X player," but we always hear that, and then we hear that we just weren't comfortable paying that price. DD has already lamented the cost of SP on the FA market.

I think they fill the hole in the rotation with Worley, or someone similar.

So that's a no? Interesting. I would be disappointed with that. I guess we will see.

DD has repeatedly said that they want to address the pitching. The Orioles have been tied to several FA pitchers. I have no reason to believe that we are standing pat with the rotation. That seems to be an overly negative view, with no real reason to take such a viewpoint. I think they will address the pitching. You obviously don't I guess we will see how it comes out.

If the purpose of a big offer to Davis was to sign him quickly, it failed. Otherwise, , either we overbid and will pay him more than we could have if we'd started lower, or someone will beat our offer. Mainly I just wish we were more interested in the other top hitters, some of whom are likely to be better than Davis in the long run.

:agree:

There's plenty of reason to have that viewpoint. We're near the top of our expected payroll. Our GM is, for some reason, shocked at FA prices. Other than Ubaldo, when was the last time the O's signed a decent SP?

This offseason seems to be following the same pattern as all our offseasons. Be mentioned in the running for many players, but not willing to pay what it takes. Hard to keep giving this team the benefit of the doubt. Show me something first.

As far as SP goes I think the O's decided that the only serious upgrade to the rotation would be the likes of Price, Greinke, and Zimmerman, and they weren't paying for those years and money. After that, the second tier SP wasn't any better than Chen, or what we have. So they decided to get the cheapest SP for the fewest years, who could give them 180 IN at the back of the rotation, and make sure the pen was solid.

DD has not said he is shocked. He said some of the prices are staggering. They are. You are free to be as negative as you wish. I simply choose to listen to what DD is saying and watch what he is doing. I have no reason to think he won't address the hole in the rotation. Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

Or do what KC does and just yank your pitcher after 5 anyway.

It's ridiculous what Price and Grenkie got. DD is right on that.

This reminds me of the 5 year old who wants a two scoops ice cream cone and is told he is only getting one scoop, so he pouts because he isn't getting any ice cream at all. They are trying to get Kazmir for 3 years and 12-13M AAV. They just don't want to pay for 4. He isn't really worth 3.

Throw in the fact that only 5 of the MLBTR top 20 free agents have been signed to date. It appears that the market is moving slowly across the board. Hard to conclude that the Orioles are done at this point.

We have proven that we won't get any players where there is a real competive bidding going on. That's not a complaint, just a fact. Maybe this market plays into DD's hands. There are a bunch of teams in on Kazmir so I'll be shocked if we sign him.

O'Day doesn't count?

    • Yeah, basically this, that Westburg's underlying numbers (EV, barrel %, xwOBA) seem to point at this being pretty real, or at least that there's nothing 'undeserved / lucky' about this hot streak, if it's just that.
    • The problem with a Cowser/Kjerstad/Stowers/Bradfield outfield roster is there are no right handers to handle LHP. I don't think and completely left handed outfield is the destination for an organization the values versatility.
    • Looks maybe concussion related.
    • How can you not be romantic about baseball? This seems slightly poetic. I enjoyed reading, and correlated your experience in the stands back to what I watch in Game 1 on MASN.  It was also pretty cool to hear Jim Palmer give you a shout out in Game 2 of the series on Live TV.
    • I am not worried.  It just doesn’t remotely meet the eye test.  He has been great in the field . I can think of at least 3 outstanding plays he has made and not any that I thought he should have gotten but didn’t. Meanwhile Holliday is 3 OAA and I can’t think of an outstanding play and can think of a number I thought he should have made.
    • Nicely stated Roy. Every since I was 9 years old and saw the O's vs. the Tokyo Giants in Tokyo in 1971, I've been infected with the Orange/Black virus. There is no cure and I don't want one. You and I sat at the lunch table with Jim Palmer at the 1970 World Series Champs reunion, and its still one of my enduring baseball memories. You said I looked like Carlton Fisk! I was at all 3 games in this Angels series, right behind the O's dugout. I got to see all our boys, and just simply love to watch this team play. And in true baseball fashion, the one game on paper we should have dominated (GRod vs. 8+ ERA Channing), we end up down 7-0 and lose. But watching Gunnar's homers, his electric triple, and he made a fantastic play today on a ball that went under Westburg's glove, Adley do Adley things, Cowser, holy crap. Kimbrel v. Trout with bases loaded, bottom of 9th, 2 outs, down by 2? That was fun. Next game Trout bats leadoff and torches a GRod fastball for a homer to the opposite field.  An observation.... If you didn't know anything about the team, and you only watched game 1 batting practice, you'd think Cowser and O'Hearn were the studs of the team. Mountcastle was taking BP with the reserves and he put on a show as well.  Home after 3 straight days watching this O's team, so jealous of the Balt fans in Balt that get to see the team with regularity. It's a special bunch.
