Projected Opening Day Payroll 2016 Orioles -- Up to the Moment

Yeah but the luxury tax isn't the issue. How much we have to spend for the 2016 team is

I'm sorry but I don't see an issue.

I'm "accounting" for the opening day payroll per my definition and the standard used by most major websites and the MLB. You are certainly free to account for the opening day payroll in any manner that you prefer.

Here's hoping that at the projected 140 million that I read about earlier today...people can stop whining about payroll.

Even in the unlikely event that everybody completely stopped complaining about payroll, there are a gazillion other things that they could find to complain about (and trust me, they will.)

Updated.

If the O's add an outfielder and a couple of starting pitchers, the opening day payroll should easily reach $150M

I keep seeing "a couple of starting pitchers" thrown around, but every time I ask this question, nobody seems to have an answer...

Who is being bumped from the rotation?

Tillman

Gonzo

Gausman

Jimenez

It's already started. Too many long term commitments. I don't know how people expected payroll to increase while simultaneously not taking any sort of risk with respect to long term contracts.

Updated for the Matusz settlement and all transactions to date.

The projected payroll as of this moment is the highest opening day payroll in Orioles history and exceeds the corresponding payroll for 2015 by over 17M or 14.7%. That increase is approaching the largest percentage change in Duquette's tenure. That occurred in 2014 at 17.4%.

It's pretty meaningless to compare payroll increases like that.

If the average increase in payroll of all other teams is 17.4%, all the O's did was keep pace

Just from a payroll perspective, if they were 16th highest payroll last year, where are they this year?

Also, they lost their best starting pitcher and are replacing him from within the organization at a cheaper cost. Wieters Davis ODay cost more but without improving last years team

#1) I don't have a dog in this "fight"; I am providing factual and accurate information (all too often lacking in support of expressed opinions)

#2) "pretty meaningless to compare payroll increases like that."

Really! I would suggest that is an unusual characterization of the hundreds (perhaps, thousands) of posts on this message board regarding changes in this team's payroll.

#3) "If the average increase in payroll of all other teams is 17.4%, all the O's did was keep pace"

Here's the current information that I compiled from the

Baseball Prospectus Compensation Website. The MLB total for 2016 is understated because it does not include estimates for unsigned players. If you add my estimated 10% (to account for players yet to be signed) to the 2015 MLB payroll figure, there will be a very small projected increase in total team payrolls for 2016.

Great post. Yes Abbott doesn't really offer anything meaningful in that post.

I have the 2016 O's payroll earned at 137.455m.

11.25m deferred

O's total payroll to be paid in 2016- 126.205

Thanks for your response.

Can you advise as to what accounts for the $1M+ difference between your number and mine?

Thanks

The payroll for 2016 is 126 million currently. Not 140m. Not 136m.

An increase of about 8% from last year.

And it won't be going up much more.

Maybe we should have a parade for Pete or something down Eutaw St for almost bankrupting this small, feeble operation we call the O's and MASN.
