Projected Opening Day Payroll 2016 Orioles -- Up to the Moment

For all of us bean counters, here's the current projected opening day team payroll. I'm dealing only with the "active" roster; but the O's will have pay obligations for players on the 40 man roster. I'll try to keep this up to date through opening day (all help appreciated).

To be on this list, the player must:

• Be on the 40 man roster and
  
• Be under major league contract or
  
• Be without remaining options or
  
• Have had MLB playing time in 2015
  

All of the latest transactions are included. For pre-arb players, I've assumed the minimum.

Salaries are displayed as rounded to the nearest $10k, and the total payroll is accurate to 2 decimal places. Projections for those under contract are from the Baseball Prospectus Compensation Website.

There was no inflation adjustment in the minimum salary for 2016; so, it remains at $507,500.

<b>As with virtually all team payroll tabulations on the web, my total payroll figure does not reflect any deduction for deferred salaries.</b> However, I have noted the contract deferrals in the right-most column of the below chart.

The roster, as shown here, lists 25 players -- 13 position players and 12 pitchers. To reach the 25 player limit, I've dropped Jimmy Paredes.

Well, he's only listing the deferred portion for 2016, not the full amount. But I've never seen a breakdown of how much each year is deferred. We have those numbers on Davis, Gallardo, Jimenez, but I've never seen the breakdown on Hardy.

Their method includes the deferred comp in the current year, with no discount for the time value of money. Not the most economically accurate method, but since they do it the same way for all teams, at least it's apples to apples. I don't know how many other teams have deferred comp obligations as substantial as the Orioles', though.

BB-Ref is listing 33 players in their compilation. They are also doing this for pre-arb players:

"Estimate of Remaining Players Costs <small>(based on 1-year avg of all pre-arb players)"; I am listing pre-arb players at the current league minimum until their 2016 contracts are signed; this approach accounts for all of the difference between my total estimate and theirs.

As with most data providers (and I), they ignore all deferred compensation in their calculations. That is, they ignore (do not deduct) any deferred salary in the current year; they ignore (do not add) any deferred salary from the previous year that must be set aside (in effect, placed in escrow) by July of the current year; and they may ignore any previously deferred compensation to former players that must be paid the player(s) in the current year (uncertain about this).

As do the other professional sites, they make this disclaimer:

"This is not intended as an accurate payroll accounting for current.(sic)"
