Mark Trumbo agrees to $9.15 million deal to avoid arbitration

Using fantasy baseball analysis in real baseball is not usually a sound strategy.

In fantasy baseball, most leagues don't penalize Mark Trumbo for lack of plate discipline but Carter will kill you with a low batting average. In real baseball, they have very similar offensive value.

Carter isn't 33, he is 11 months younger than Trumbo.

Carter is coming off a .3 fWAR -0.1 rWAR season and Trumbo is coming of a 1.1 fWAR 1.6 rWAR season. Trumbo has had three better seasons than Carter's best season. Carter's OPS is slightly higher but their OPS+ is identical because OPS+ accounts for ballparks and Carter has had the luxury of playing in Houston.

LOL. Thanks for the correction. When I went to check his age, accidentally clicked on the wrong Chris Carter. My bad. Having said that, I still have no interest in Chris Carter. Much prefer Trumbo and it is still not a close call. Trumbo has a solid chance to be worth the slightly more than 1 win the Orioles will pay him for. It would surprise me if Carter is worth the fraction of a win Pittsburgh will be paying him for.

In what sense is Trumbo a bench bat? That's one of the more outlandish things stated lately.

Do you want your starting 1b or DH to put up a .750 OPS and a 0.8 WAR (a -1.1 WAR the year before)? That puts him about 15-17th in the rankings of 1b.....

Defense is the biggest thing that hurts him and playing the OF in Arizona killed his value.

I agree defense hurts him, but that kind of plays into my thought process. Do you want him as your every day DH? Even 1b? I dont think he puts up enough power numbers to warrant that. I would think a platoon of him and Pedro Alvarez could be effective, but then you are paying a lot of money for a DH/First basemen.

Let me add this caveat, I am talking about the team as currently constructed. If they add an Upton or Cespedes than I think you can live with a Trumbo in the lineup. But if you have a weak hitting OF to go with Trumbo then its not a good thing...

To be clear, it was outfield defense that was the problem. Trumbo plays a decent 1B.

Not too many 1st that can hit 47 HRs and drive in 117 RBIs, so pretty much, anybody we put at 1st, which be a reduction in offense

I wasn't comparing him to Chris Davis, and if I were I wouldn't use home runs and RBI. I'm comparing Mark Trumbo the outfielder to Mark Trumbo the first baseman. Yes, he will be more valuable defensively at first, but he will also be less valuable offensively. It is not a foregone conclusion changing positions will be a net positive.

As a DH, if my choices are Mark Trumbo for 9+ million or Chris Carter at 2.5 it's Carter by a pretty wide margin. I'll take the slightly better offensive player for a fraction of the cost.

    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
