Worst case draft scenario?

Recommended Posts

Actually, I think the worst case scenario would be Beckham, Alvarez and Crow going in the first 3 picks. But that's just me.

Really? I'm a much bigger fan of Matusz than Crow. I just don't like odd mechanics, they are so easy to get off and never come back. Look at guys like Willis, Zito, Nomo...not that Crow's is crazy and exaggerated like theirs, but that herky-jerky motion he has is either going to lead to control problems or injuries.

I think if either way this happens, and say we don't want whichever pitcher is left, there is still Hosmer who would be a great prospect to draft and just "let him stew" so to speak. Check on him in 3-4 years and see how he has done.

T Beckham, Hosmer and Alvarez go in the first 3 picks...Is that the worst case scenario for us???

Its tough to really go wrong when you still have Crow and Matusz available at that point. If both were to suddenly retire, that would be the ultimate worst case scenario.

I don't really see a worst case. I do not see how anyone can complain if we get a pitcher projected to be a two or better - Matu.

I hope there's a best case. We get one of these pitchers and one of the top 1B bats falls to the second round.

T Beckham, Matusz, and Posey off the board.

O's staring at a choice of 3 Boras clients for pick 4.

Having to choose between Hosmer, Crow, Alvarez and Smoak would not be a bad situation. Personally, I wouldn't consider Smoak unless Tex signs an extension with the Braves before the draft, but if Alvarez is on the board at four, we will make the call to Boras and tell him to be by his phone at 11:59pm the night before the signing deadline. Then Alvarez will head to Hawaii to play his first professional baseball.

Someone remind me of the Boras clients. Worst case could be 3 non-Boras clients going top 3 and the O's deciding to do the same. Who are the top 4 non-Boras clients?

Alvarez, Crow and Hosmer are all Boras guys...

So- Tim Beckham, Brian Matusz, Buster Posey and Justin Smoak would likely be the next best 4 players.

I think the worst thing we could do is pick someone and let them sit out this season. If we take a Boras client (Hosmer doesn't sound like a 4 to me with no defense), it should be with the message: "We'll pay you what we paid Weiters if you sign now and join him at Frederick (or Bowie by then)." We should talk to Boras about this first and if we don't think they'll agree we should pick someone else.

Edit: Sorry I was thinking of Alonso not Hosmer; never mind that point.

Your comment about Hosmer... it seems clear that you said that Hosmer is a poor defender, and if I read that correctly you are far from accurate there. Hosmer is an outstanding defensive first baseman.

Sorry, I edited it above; catching it just before you posted.

IMO, there is no worst case scenario. We will get one of the top 4 guys in the draft. Hopefully Alvarez will somehow fall to us at #4. I realize we need positional players in our system, but you still need to draft the best player available, regardless of position. If it's Crow or Matusz then so be it.

You can't draft a player based on organizational need. If JJ has Matusz ranked #4 and Hosmer #4A then you can debate which player to draft. Otherwise you rank the top 4 players and take the highest one available to us with our pick.

Are you saying that the top 4 are interchangeable? I don't think you are. If they aren't then worst case scenario would be our top 3 ranked guys being off the board when our turn comes up. Best case would be our #1 guy dropping to us for whatever reason followed by scenario #2 (our #2 dropping to us), etc.. There is always a worst case scenario, IMO. :)

Dead on. There is always a worst-case, fortunately, our worst-case scenario is pretty good :)
