Baltimore Orioles (26-19, 2nd -2.0) vs. Cleveland Indians (25-20, 2nd -0.5)

Streak / L10

BAL: -4, Lost 5 of 7 / L10: 3-7

CLE: +3, Won 3 of 4 / L10: 7-3

NEW: Quality Start minimum requirements (experimental, suggestions welcome)

- 6 IP, 2ER

- 7 IP, 3ER

- Game ERA must be 4.00 or less

Game 1 (7:10)

(QS=2)Mike Wright (2-3) 4.97 (1.37/.272), 30/14 (4HR)

vs.

(QS=1)Trevor Bauer (3-2) 4.31 (1.34/.242), 37/16 (5HR)

Mike Wright: Wright has struggled in two of the last three starts and has allowed nine earned in 18.1 May innings, but only one home run. Wright is probably ultimately destined for the bullpen, but for now, he's a starter. Wright will make his ML debut at "We Pay To Defend Your Killer In Court" Insurance Company Field and against the Indians. Wright has been pretty awful on the road this season in three road starts and still gets hammered by lefties.

Splits & Sits

77 vs. left: .368/.429/.519, 3HR

101 vs. right: .200/.280/.287, HR

Bases Empty: .268

RISP w/2 outs: .267

Career @ Progressive Field (0 starts)

Career vs. CLE (0 starts)

Debut

vs. Batter

NA

Trevor Bauer: Bauer started in the bullpen and has made five starts recently. As a starter, Bauer has a 4.13 (1.24). In four May starts, he has a 3.70 (1.15). His last start was against Boston and of course, it was the worst of the four where he allowed four runs in five innings on eight hits and two walks. He has allowed a home run in three of those four starts, but he has been solid so far in May overall. Bauer has never pitched well at "We Pay To Defend Your Killer In Court" Insurance Company Field and has been even worse against the Orioles in his two starts.

Splits & Sits

Career vs Baltimore (2 starts)

vs. Batter

Adam Jones 0/6, 2K

Manny Machado 2/5, 2 S-HR, BB

Caleb Joseph 1/4, BB

Mark Trumbo 1/4, BB

Chris Davis 1/3, 2B, RBI

Ryan Flaherty 0/3

Pedro Alvarez 0/2

Jonathan Schoop 1/2, RBI

McCullers struck out another 10 Orioles as the strikeouts just keep piling up and he only needed five innings to do it. On the other mound, Gausman gave up three home runs and it was inevitable at some point that he would come back to earth a bit. It is still a shame he wasn't able to get a single win during his hot start, though. Gausman gave up two laser beam shots to George Springer and one to Valbuena who hit one out in all three games of this series. It seems the league has caught on to this team and are not throwing strikes or as many fastballs to hit. It's unreal how many times the Orioles have struck out in this series and Palmer has been all over them and he's absolutely right. As mentioned in the game thread, Kim may be the best hitter on the team right now and should be earning himself some more playing time in the upcoming games. I still say he will run away with the starting job in left if Buck keeps putting him out there. The Orioles have now lost four in a row and seven of 10.

Well, neither Wright or Bauer have been anything special this season though Bauer is a bit better. Wright will be seeing Cleveland for the first time and Bauer has struggled against the Orioles in two starts. On paper, this is a pretty "meh" pitching matchup.

Elsewhere, Boston got cremed by Colorado today and Toronto has now won two in a row to get back into third place six games back. The Yankees and Rays have both lost two in a row as third to fifth place in the division is seperated by only one game. In the Central, the CWS/KC game was rained out and Cleveland remains a half game in second place. KC has just lost Moustakas for the season with a torn ACL and Gordon goes to the DL as well with a wrist injury though he will be back at some point. How effective he will be is yet to be seen. In the West, Houston is the only team that did not have an off day tonight and remain nine games out. It will be interesting to see if this hot streak continues for them and if they can climb back into contention.

Well, that went about as poorly as it possibly could have. Clay Buchholz was a joke, the Red Sox scored two runs, and Jackie Bradley Jr.'s hitting streak ended.

Let's talk not about the blow-by-blow of the game, but the takeaways and, hopefully, the consequences.

The big one is obvious here: this has to be it for Clay Buchholz. It just has to. He was cruising through three innings, then gave up three two-run homers between the fourth and fifth. The second a batter reached, it was total disaster. If ever there was a game to give ammunition to the armchair psychiatrists of the world, this one would be it.

Whether you give credit to the 'headcase' idea or not, though, I think we can all get behind this one simple idea: Buchholz must go.
