is McFarland a better starter than Mike Wright?

wildcard

I know. I know. There are many here that don't like TJ McFarland. But if McFarland pitches 6 or more innings and allow 2 or less runs for Norfolk on Sunday, I feel like TJ might be in line to join the O's rotation.

Wright continues to struggle. Poor command. Buck is in shake it up mode. Kim in left for Rickard. Tolliver up, Matusz gone. Adam the leadoff hitter. Wright has an option. I am not sure he is safe. He will make his next start on Wednesday. It better be a good one IMO.

1. Buck likes TJ

2. TJ has more experience in the majors than Wright.

3. The O's dropped out for first place.

4. Boston is playing well.

5. Buck is making moves.

I say watch what TJ does on Sunday.

TJ has been hurt Wildcard. Had an MRI on knee. I doubt they recall him directly without another start at Norfolk first.

The MRI only showed a bruise, He is to start at Norfolk on Sunday. If he goes 6 inning and pitches well on Sunday he may be recalled.

Wright has higher upside. TJ is better right now. I could also see Worley being moved back to the rotation if Gallardo isn't ready soon.

Worley has done well in relief (0.00 ERA in 10 appearances) but not so good as a starter (5.06 ERA in 2 starts).

I agree with this assessment. I think TJ will get more time in AAA. We will see.

I could see this move being made in mid-June, but I think Buck will give Wright a little more rope and get a longer look at McFarland in AAA before making a decision.

My guess is that its more a function on how McFarland does on Sunday and if Buck and staff think he is ready to move into the rotation.

Wright has started 8 games and he will get a 9th start before McFarland can take his spot. That is more than enough rope IMO. He doesn't appear to be getting better. He needs to go work on his command.

Yeah coming off that little injury TJ needs some more innings in AAA before this is an option. Plus he was just getting stretched out before the injury. But he looks like he's got some extra life on his fastball. Combine that with him being in his 4th year and we might have something.

I'm not really sure it makes sense to swap out Wright for McFarland when Gallardo's return is right around the corner.

He threw 45 pitches in a simulation this morning.

You could be right.

However, there is also the fact that Jimenez is not pitching well. In 2014 when that happened Jimenez was moved to the pen. Gallardo may be his replacement. Tolliver could be optioned. The pen was doing pretty well without a lefty. Its the rotation that needs help.

I don't know how or when Wright and Jimenez's spots in the rotation are addressed. But Gallardo and McFarland are candidates as replacements. We will have to see how Buck and Dan moves forward.

What Rule 5 guy doesn't Buck like?

Isn't McFarland just a left-handed Wright? They are both pitchers who should never be in a game for more than three innings. McFarland isn't very good and Wright is too emotional.

Davis was just a misfit from Texas before Buck believed in him.

Tillman a highly touted minor leaguer that couldn't make the jump to the majors.

Joseph a life long minor league catcher.

O'Day was one of Buck's waiver claims.

Buck gives chances to players. Sometime they work and sometimes they don't. He keeps the ones that work.

McFarland has more experience in the majors than Wright. Just looks like a guy who might be given a starting opportunity by Buck. How it turns out is anyones guess. But the O's have need of better starters and I don't think Buck and Dan are going to sit on the hands an watch the O's fail.
