How far do the O's trust their rookie pitching?

The Red Sox bring baseball's best offense into town today. The O's will counter with rookie pitchers. Wilson starts. With Brach, O'Day and Britton nailing down the win yesterday Buck would probably like to go with rookies Bundy, Givens and Tolliver. Worley is probably unavailable after going 4.2 innings on Saturday.

Buck does have options. He can pitch any of Brach, O'Day or Britton for a second game in a row. Then they will not be available for Tuesday when Gausman starts.

McFarland could be called up today to give the O's a more experienced long reliever. Tolliver would probably be optioned.

Buck has no choice but to trust his rookie pitching in the four games vs the Red Sox. Its the question of how and when he decides to uses them that will be interesting. Rookie Mike Wright starts on Wednesday. Oddly enough all the rookies are in a better position to be successful than Jimenez who starts on Thursday.

There could be a lot of runs scored in this series.

I don't anticipate that McFarland would be called up today. If he was, I would expect Flaherty to Norfolk because they'll need pitching.

I do think they held TJ out yesterday in case things get out of hand one day this week.

I am looking forward to seeing how Buck uses Tolliver this series, especially if Ortiz plays.

Funny, but I like to play this game where I look at a thread title and try to guess who started it before I look at the "started by" line. For some reason, I can almost always pick out wildcard's. And they usually involve some pretty detailed point.

Anyway, good topic. The Red Sox have a terrific lineup and this is a very dangerous series for us.

I doubt Buck will pitch Brach today. Buck tried to stretch him yesterday to face the lefties in the 8th. He did not get any outs but allowed a total of 3 baserunners and threw 27 pitches.

That leaves Givens-O'Day-Britton for a close game today. If all three are used, some combination of Tolliver-Givens-Brach if tomorrow is a close one. Hopefully we blow them out today and Bundy mops up a strong performance by Tyler Wilson.

Am I wrong in thinking that nobody (esp. Britton and Oday) would really be off limits to pitch in the next two back to back if there's a 1 run lead in the 8th or 9th? I'm sure Buck would prefer not to use them, but with his back against a wall against the best competition in the division...

If he wanted Britton or ODay available for all games, I think he would be more likely to stretch Britton today, and then keep O'Day for tomorrow. Britton/Givens could combine for 3 innings today and then you would still have Brach/O'Day for 3 tomorrow. He will not pitch all three in back to back to back games.

Actually, Ubaldo might not be starting on Thursday. The Sun lists "TBA or Ubaldo Jimenez" for Thursday's start.

It's going to be an interesting series. My 29-game plan includes both today and Thursday, so I'll be there.

Hope the O's score a lot of runs. Would be great to beat the BoSox.

I guess we got at least some of the answers about O's rookie pitching vs the Red Sox.

Wilson 6.2 IP. 3 ER ERA about 4.00

Tolliver 0.2 IP Big Poopy got him for a homer

Givens 1.2 IP Allowed a three run homer to rookie Hernandez.

Buck went with the rookie relievers and got burnt.

If Gausman pitches well Brach, O'Day and Britton will be available tomorrow. I am hoping for better results.

    • Great OP and agree with what's been said. Today's game started with a lot of first pitch swings and outs. I guess that was the game plan but that drives me crazy. I quit watching. I just don't understand this team's approach to hitting. I admit to being old school but to me it's more than just the talent or lack there of. If all of a sudden, they can do a 180, it will be a miracle of the ages.
    • Yep..and PQ last year when he said something to the effect that this can’t keep happening (said it after Colts game)..and then Kc last year saying they knew the Ravens would abandon their game plan. These are all direct shots at Harbaugh. There is no other way to say it. You can say some is also directed at Lamar as well but this isn’t just Lamar. It’s everything and most of that is on Harbs.
    • It’s hard to believe the coaching isn’t working. Overall, they have been an excellent offense with him here. They rate highly in traditional stats, statcast stats or advanced stats.    But you have a lot of bad players right now, a lot of good players playing bad and a lot of young guys still learning how to play. The injuries are killing things. Coaching can only do so much for sub 600 OPS guys.
    • Great post.  You have summed up the lack of excitement perfectly.     Just a boring team to watch now.
    • It's like Tomlin said, just stay close with the Ravens and they'll beat themselves in the 4th quarter.
    • You and I agree that Fuller's take is that the reason (or part of the reason) for the failed offense is Oriole hitters' inability to take their advice. But you say that when the problem is hitters pressing too hard,  "no coaching can help that." I can't accept that. Maybe Fuller's coaching team hasn't gotten through to the Oriole hitters. If that's the case with a lot of valuable players, and it goes on for months, you need a new coaching approach or new coaches. The alternative is to conclude that you're stuck with a bunch of flawed players who can't perform well under pressure and may never be able to turn that around.
    • Let’s not overlook Harbaugh’s complete disregard for timeouts with his awful challenges. All of these little things add up over the course of a game. The Ravens continuously shoot themselves in the foot.
