Chris Davis' long foul ball last night

Putting aside the question of whether it was foul or fair, Chris Davis's shot down the foul line in the 8th inning last night was one of the most majestic shots that I have ever seen. That ball was so high that it wasn't even in the picture when they showed the play live, and from the looks of things, it came about as close to hitting the Warehouse on the fly as any ball ever has during a game. I would love to know what the apex of that ball was, and how far it traveled, and how close to the Warehouse it came.

As to whether it was fair or foul, who the hell knows? When a ball is that far above the foul pole, how can anyone judge which side of the pole it was on when it left the field of play? It's a shame they didn't have some better camera angles on it, but even if they did, I'm not sure you'd be able to tell at which point the ball passed the foul pole.

What a shot!

It was a definite moon shot. Haven't heard yet where it landed but it had to be close to the warehouse. Hopefully it's a sign that Davis is going to start warming up.

If you extended the foul line to a stripe on the warehouse it wouldn't matter how high it was. The sign that is in line with the foul pole is Dempsey's I believe, and the ball comes down well to the left of it in the replay. It was fair IMO.

Looked to me that it landed to the right of the sign and over that last triangular section about 3/4 of the way back, if not completely over it. There was likely some hook to it, but as Frobby said, it was just too high to tell. I wish MASN would get smart and install some stationary cameras down both lines for this type of scenario. Also couldn't be that hard to put a small camera on top of each foul pole like the crossbar camera in the NFL.

Heck with the cameras, they leave too much room for interpretation. With technology being what it is. They could put some kind of motion/field sensor on top of the pole. Have it rigged to a light at the base of the pole and have it be green for fair and red for foul.

I haven't seen a replay that show that, though there may be one.
If you watch the MLB highlight, there is one towards the end of it that shows the ball coming down. You can see it almost in line with what looks like a drain pipe going up the side of the warehouse, and that is well to the CF side of the Dempsey sign. Watch at 1.22 of the video.

I can see how the image itself is inconclusive, but knowing the geometry of the park I'd say the ball was fair when crossing the pole.

(Hard to see but the ball is the white speck between the drain pipe and bottom window to the left of the Dempsey sign in the image.)

I think it's evident from the photo which was taken from the video, that the Dempsey sign is in line with the foul pole and the ball is clearly to CF side of it. They had all that info in NY. That's all the geometry they needed. They just got it wrong.

Still pretty hard to tell, given the camera angle. You'd need a shot lined up with the foul line to really have a good look. It certainly hit the wall of the Warehouse on the bounce a good bit to the right of the Dempsey's sign.

At this point, with the game decided, I'm more interested in how high and far it was than whether it was fair, since that's academic.

Where did you see this?

I hope so too. He's the kinda of guy that if he gets on a hot streak, he can carry the team. Now would be a good time.
