Taking a Flyer on Jason Botts?

I don't...Moore provides more versatility and has a better chance of being here long term.

However, Moore isn't here right now and it doesn't seem like he will be anytime soon.

Plus, i think we have room for both of these guys.

Botts right now becomes your everyday DH while Moore plays everyday at a position in AAA. Botts won't be playing the field - so he's got one spot to play and that is DH. This pushes Huff to 1B/3B and Millar to the bench. When you trade Huff, Moore comes back up permanently to play the 1B/3B spot. Or if you release/trade Millar, Moore can come back for a bench role and then be a starter when Huff is traded. Either way for Moore to get back on this team Huff or Millar needs to go.

But it's a moot point as Trembley does not want guys on his team who just hit, even though that's what we need most right now...

Well Scott Moore can play multiple positions, and has *gasp* hit in the past despite not hitting well in AAA so far this year, but he's not on the team either.

So I guess Trembley just wants guys who can't hit.

As long as you can play defense and be a good role model, you have a spot on Trembley's team, no matter what your offense is like...

The knock on Moore was his defense when we acquired him in the Trachsel deal. And surprise, guess who didn't get much playing time in Sept and who got sent down at the beginning of the season.

Because Millar is 36 and will be gone after the year is over. Unless we've signed Tex somehow without anyone knowing it on May 8th, we have no 1B next year. Not even a back-up 1B... Moore could be one... but Botts could be one too.

Why not find out????

So could Huff.

If you were to see a number of scouting reports on Botts, that basically concur with VAtech's assessment of his weaknesses as a hitter, would you still want to bother giving him a shot. He has an .883 OPS in the PCL over 8 seasons. He has been given a number of shots at the ML level and done zilch. He just may be no good. Perhaps the O's have seen such scouting reports.

I'd still rather have him, loopey swing and all, over McCrory or Aquino or whatever other unused 13th arm you'd have sitting out in the pen.

Sure, give me Moore or Reimold (if he's gonna play) over Botts, but if the debate is Botts or a 13th arm, the answer is definitely Botts.

282 AB's at the MLB level is hardly "a number of shots".

He's had 4 different shots in the majors where he's put up a 660-700 OPS. He hasn't put up numbers anywhere near his minor league numbers. I wouldn't have had a problem picking him up, just wouldn't want to give him a starting spot.

And he has only been given any kind of consistent at bats last year, over the final 2 months of the year...One month he wasn't that good...The other month he was certainly good enough to warrant a bench spot.

You guys really know how to beat a dead horse.

Botts is gone...get over it.

Now let's trade for Jason Donald (Philly SS prospect). Send Torres packing and call up Reimold. Reimold will be the added bat on the bench that you guys are clamoring for. Just think if we picked up Botts, then we couldn't keep him around when Reimold is called up since we have to have 13 pitchers. ;)

Reimold needs to play everyday...I don't want him up here riding the pine.

    • Sending Jackson down does nothing, there is nothing left to prove down there. He is taking good ABs, he is working counts, he looks fine in the field etc. I have used the Cowser comp, not to say he should be sent down, in the sense that Cowser looked particularly lost at times during his callup last year. Jackson is facing some professional adversity for the first time as a professional keep running him out there.    The fortunate thing is he isn't hurting the team in a significant way right now, and when it finally does click the Orioles will be just that much better.
    • Actually move Westburg to 7th so there’s not so many lefties in a row.
    • I’ll go with: Gunnar SS Adley C O’Hearn 1B Tony RF Westburg 3B Mullins CF Cowser LF Kjerstad DH Holliday 2B
    • The question is, can he be productive playing just 1-2 times a week? We don't know because he's never really been in that role. Not everyone can stay productive in a part-time role. I think the Orioles will find a way to get him in the lineup 4-5 days a week. He can play corner outfield (except I would not play him in LF in Camden), DH and 1B. He still does not look great at 1B, but he can be serviceable if it means getting his bat into the lineup. That's a decent amount of ways to keep him and others fresh. Santander probably is at risk to sit a bit more than usual, but this also gives the Orioles an opportunity to have a very left-handed heavy lineup against righties at times, with Mountcastle sitting. The Orioles left-handed heavy lineup could be: 1. Henderson - SS 2. Rutschman - C 3. O'Hearn - 1B 4. Santander - RF 5. Cowser - LF 6. Mullins - CF 7. Westburg - 3B (R) 8. Kjerstad - DH 9. Holliday - 2B Imagine having to face that lineup and then have Mountcastle, McCann, Urias and Mateo for pinch running as a bench. Now don't get me wrong, Mountcastle is not going to be benched all that much, but Kjerstad could give Santander, Cowser, Mullins (with Cowser moving to CF), O'Hearn, Mountcastle, and Rutschman when he DHing a day off.  That's a lot of ways to keep him fresh and get his bat in the lineup.
    • If so, probably just for 2 days or so.
    • Well, there are now 8 days left in April, so 8 days based on last year.  After that, if I recall correctly, he turns into a pumpkin until October.
    • Kjerstad also has had pretty good success vs. LHP in his career.
