Oriole All-Stars

I think it is a fair time to look who the All-Stars from the Oriole's should be.

IMO:

Locks: Britton, Machado

Nearing locks: Brach, Tillman, Mark Trumbo

Should be in the mix: Wieters,

Hyun Soo Kim, yes I didn't see this as a possibility but if he keeps his average above 320 then he needs consideration. If he stays above 350 then he may be moving to the lock category. He is going to get the majority of the at bats the next few weeks.

Adam Jones (if he can raise his average to the 270 range)

If Schoop hit a hot streak then he could get in the mix.

I was just about to post an All-Star thread. Great minds :thumbsup1:

I think we will have either four or five, assuming everyone keeps producing like they are. Machado, Trumbo and Britton should be locks. And I think at least one of Tillman or Brach makes it, though quite likely that both do.

Wieters also with an outside chance.

That being said, we are incredibly fortunate to have a team with so many all-star caliber players. I remember for years having to debate who the Orioles lone representative at the game would be and nowadays, we are worrying if we have too many wrothy options. Pretty darn great.

The group should be Machado, Trumbo, Wieters, Tillman, Brach, and Britton. Wieters gets in because of performance, past reputation, and the fact the position in the AL is quite weak. In a perfect world Brach and Britton get a la last year with O'Day and Britton, but who knows if Yost will do it two years in a row.

Kim doesn't have a chance. He doesn't even have 100 plate appearances yet this year. Most regulars are in the 220-250 range.

For reference, Kim has as many PAs this year as J.J. Hardy, who hasn't played since May 1.

I know Brach deserves it but Givens is 5-0 with 20 K in 14 innings. I could see him getting consideration from Yost...then again don't expect Yost to be too generous to Orioles players given recent history.

If you were managing the all star game would you want someone with splits like Givens?

Brach has been worth basically an entire win more than Givens, has more innings, appearances, fewer walks, and a much lower WHIP. If anyone besides Britton deserves to go it's Brach. He's been pitching out of his mind.

You are very right, but Yardbird is right, with Yost as the manager and making the selection, who knows what he will do.

He is going to get around 100 more AB's before the All-Star game giving him around 178. If he is hitting close to 350 I am just saying he should get consideration. You may be right he wouldn't make it because everyone else will have closer to 300 but I think he is in the conversation.

    • You always need shuttle guys. Ideally, I would think they’d like to have 2-3 spots they can interchange between 5-6 guys. That allows them to maybe get some younger arms in there, like McDermott and the others we mentioned already.  Bautista, if he is back to his old form, Seranthony, Cano, Soto (who I think may just surprise some people), while Cionel and Akin are not sure things. Either could be moved. They should make some moves there, IMO. Cionel has not really improved as much as I had hoped. Akin has had a very good year. Are they ARB eligible this year?
    • You’re the one who threw Ripken into the discussion.  And I don’t think anyone is necessarily saying that Gunnar will be as good as Ripken.  Cal is 3rd all time in Total Zone Runs for a SS.  But, Cal also proves that you don’t judge a SS solely on how many errors they make.  The years that Cal made 26, 25 and 25 errors, he was +11, +23, +O Rtot.  And  Gunnar is playing a solid SS now by the advanced metrics.
    • Coby's problem is not the SSS at bats, but rather his sample size on defense, both minors and majors. He has no position at this point in his career. He's a DH and not in the lineup today because AS is Dhing. Eloy is on the bench as well. Both are PH options so stay ready.
    • I do not know if there were extenuating circumstances or not.  Could be it's a quieter locker room without the rest of the guys, which would make sense in a concussion situation.  So, maybe I did rush to an unfair conclusion here.  At the time, I felt like it more of a "spring training look" when the starters all leave the field after they're done playing.....so yes, there could be other very reasonable explanations. I'll stand corrected, and retract my conclusion.
    • Message to Coby.....you better learn how to use a glove.
    • Totally agree.  And at no point will some people be able to admit that the shiny, new rookie may be overmatched, and putting him just because hangouters want him in there may not be the best move for team chemistry or results  People need to earn their way when given a chance, and with where we are in the standings, leashes are going to be short.  We're not the White Sox who can afford to play anyone they want because it doesn't matter.
