Why is TJ on the roster?

Playing 4 games in Toronto, already have Duensing here. Buck is pushing his pitchers because for one reason he has 2 guys this series in Duensing and TJ who he doesn't want to use.

I know we don't have many great options at AAA but another RH makes more sense right now. Boston has a mainly RH lineup as well.

Saving TJ to back up Wright or Ubaldo along with Worley. Wouldn't have wanted to see either TJ or Duensing in there tonight.

Buck is playing with a 5 man pen this series. We have 2 guys he wants no part of in a close game. Anyone can be a long man. For the first time not having O'Day hurt.

That's it imo.

So you keep a guy to be a long man? At that point the game is probably a loss anyway. No reason Duensing can't pitch 2-3 innings in a series like this. They aren't matching him up except maybe Saunders or Smoak.

Lets say they optioned him prior to the trip to Toronto. He would need to stay out on optional assignment for ten days. Now if both Wright and Jimenez both melt down, WHO would you have for a replacement long man in the series???

This is it exactly. Mac had become a victim of our terrible starting pitching. He should have about 3-4 AAA starts instead of just 1. The truth is though that the results in those potential starts don't really matter and the team already knows what they have in TJ. I see that as a positive.

As I said let Duensing soak up those innings. Off day on Monday. You need righties vs that team. Who cares if you burn Duensing for a couple of days. If a pitcher is coming in real early what are the odds of a win anyway?

I don't know if this team has someone in the system they think can matchup vs lefties but it has to be a priority by the deadline.

You are stating that you think Duensing can cover two melt down games and the six to eight innings necessary?? I think that is not even feasable yet alone a good idea. TJ would cover one game while Worley covers the other. As of right now you do not have the use of either Brach or Givens tomorrow. Limited innings for Bundy and not using Britton in a non-save situation. Who do you have to cover TWO Blown up pitchers in a "what if" scenario???

TJ is one of the O's long relievers; for now Worley is the other one. One of them would come in if our starter blows up early. His job would be to keep the opponents from scoring more while (hopefully) our bats will come in and save the day.

Or else if the O's are in the wrong end of a completely blown game, then one (or both) of the long men can eat up innings -- otherwise known as "mopping up."

It was asked in OP as to WHY T.J. McFarland was on the roster. I have pointed out as to why he is on the roster and the answer I get for my response is a view point of a poster that does not seem to understand the way movement of players from the Minors to the Majors works. I get the added response that the team as currently constructed can not win while being 12 games over .500 ball andin first place. Also while having what may be the best Manager in baseball of controlling the innings used by the bullpen to keep them fresh and with the Best ERA in the American League. I probably should have just directed some posters to the article writen by Roch on the MASN site about the Bullpen Management and left it at that.

No anyone can't be a long man; Brach, Givens, Britton, are two inning guys and Duensing is probably one inning. Bundy, Worley, and TJ are stretched out to go 3+

    • For the immediate time going into 2024, we're going to need a really good left handed starting pitcher to have Soto take a seat every time he's up against the Orioles. The Yankees haven't had a lefty like him in a long time and we were able to manage Judge in several games because Hyder leveraged the matchups the best he could. We want Left on Left when pitching to Soto.
    • Also, seeing the Yankees trade away whatever farm system they have in order for Cashman to keep his job and idiot Yankee fans happy is *chefs kiss*
    • I hope Soto fails miserably.    Soto might only be 25 still, but that body is filling out and not in a good way. IIRC, he brings practically no defensive value to the table and he’s still young.  He’s trending towards fat, he’s already slow. Just need to wait till he gets old and his hitting skills erode a little bit and he’ll be a liability that Yankees hopefully can’t get rid of after they’re stupid enough to extend him. Maybe like a Stanton 2.0.
    • I tried to make it simple but I like this complex answer. Besides, it's on point to the OP question, which is not what you predict will happen, but what you'd like to see happen.
    • Arizona makes sense to me. It has a large Latino population and the Diamondbacks are a very good young upcoming team with a real chance to win the World Series. Now they can compete with Texas for Montgomery, or throw the Orange & Black hat in the ring for Shota Imanaga. Or trade for Corbin Burnes and call it a day.
    • No way that doesn't work out for them,
    • I don't believe Elias has been running around Nashville over the last couple of days taking up other team's time about starting pitching only to suddenly decide to throw the entire budget at a guy who's going to pitch 70 innings at most.  $20 million AAV over multiple years could well be off the table at this point, but something like a Cease trade could very much still be possible IMO.
