Any interest in Sabathia?

He's quietly having a pretty good season. If the Yankees keep falling back, he's probably available. Would you consider him? I wouldn't do more than a Mike Wright and a lower level prospect however. Thoughts?

I would trade for him in a heartbeat. This is actually one of the very few situations where a trade within the division is easier to pull off. The Yanks get to deplete our farm system, add to theirs and stick us with a big contract in the process. But I doubt they'll move him for Wright.

I'd consider a better prospect if they eat a large some of his 2017 vesting option.

The Yanks recent "warm" streak might undermine a Sabathia deal. Will be interesting to see what happens.

They've still only gained 1 game during that span. And have fallen under .500 again. I think they are realistic.

They'll be big sellers at the deadline.

I wouldn't touch him. Everyone here is obsessed with fastball velocity and he has non left. Eventually hitters are going to catch up with him and start bombing him. Also at his age he is way more then likely to get injured before the end of his contract which will most likely vest this year.

Bartolo Colon and Jamie Moyer say hello.

Does Colon have a degenerative condition in his knees?

And carrying 300 lbs?

Answer, yes. I just looked it up. CC is packing 290. Bartolo 285. For some reason I didnt realize Bartolo was that heavy.

Well, Sabathia is 6'7". Colon is 5'11". So Colon is actually heavier than Sabathia when you factor that in

I don't think your joints care much when you are coming off the mound.

I'm not saying it doesn't hurt the joints either way. But Sabathia has the frame to carry 300 pounds vs Colon .

    • The Locked on Orioles podcast was suggesting that there had to be multiple pieces added to the deal for Castillo. Something like Mountcastle, Kjerstad, McDermott, Fabian. I don't know, seems a lot more than I would be willing to trade for Castillo
    • By some defensive metrics, Ryan Mountcastle and 2024 Gold Glove winner Carlos Santana are similar:  https://www.fieldingbible.com/drs-leaderboard/players?position=3 FWIW Luis Castillo's value at Baseball Trade Values has jumped from a negative $30.6 million on November 8, to a negative $6.1 million on November 22, to a positive $5.5 million on December 2 to a positive $2.8 million Monday to a positive $7.7 million Friday evening. The Mariners will continue to monitor Castillo's trade value as the pitching market evolves this offseason. Trade offers should determine Castillo's trade value although his no-trade clause complicates matters.
    • Context matters.  Really I should have made a much longer post incorporating the following image.   The O's are roughly 20th in revenue.  (TBH, I have some questions about that.  I think it might be lower) They're currently 19th in payroll.  Is it really fair to say they're underspending?  (Mind you this chart is a few years older.) There are a lot of people claiming they can spend 200 a year on salary.  Maybe.  But it's fair to say team's with similar revenues don't do that.
    • This is true, but the problem remains if you sign some guy to a 7 year contract, while that money might be palatable in 2026, it could quickly grow not so in the upcoming years.  Obviously, if you could sign Burnes for 1/2 years you'd do it; but that isn't really an option.
    • What happened in the 2nd half w Adley is puzzling. I would say however that 17 mill in 2027 should be more like 10% of the payroll, so far more palatable than 20%.
    • You have to look at payroll in context though thinking 3 years in advance compared to what league average will be with revenue increasing.  This is league average payroll.   2019 112 million 2020 58 million but was Covid year. 2021 120 million 2022 134 million 2023  150 million 2024 156 million So league average is up 36 million 4 years.  If it keeps around that pace league average should be over 180 million so that 100 million would be little over half of league average payroll.
    • This is drastically underestimating Paredes
