Alvarado Named SAL Pitcher of the Week

Shorebirds Hurler Earns Honor After One-Hitter on June 29

SALISBURY, MD -- The Delmarva Shorebirds are proud to announce that pitcher Cristian Alvarado has been named the South Atlantic League?s Pitcher of the Week for June 27-July 3.

Alvarado made just one start during the week, but he made sure to dazzle in it. He shut down the Greensboro Grasshoppers in Game 2 of a doubleheader on June 29, tying a career-high with seven innings pitched in a complete game one-hitter. He also allowed just one walk and struck out eight Greensboro hitters.

The start was another jewel in the crown of an impressive 2016 campaign for the 21-year-old native of Acarigua, Venezuela. As of July 5, he has made 15 starts and is tied for the team lead with six wins. Alvarado also boasts a 3.17 ERA and leads the South Atlantic League with 95 strikeouts in 82.1 innings pitched. He has notched at least seven strikeouts in nine of his appearances this year.

Alvarado?s award marks the fourth time that a Shorebird has won a weekly honor from the SAL in 2016 and the first to be won by a Delmarva pitcher. He joins Yermin Mercedes (April 18-24, June 13-19) and Ryan Mountcastle (June 6-12) as those to earn hardware this season.

Alvarado?s next start is scheduled to be on Tuesday, July 5 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium against the Lakewood BlueClaws at 7:05 p.m.
