Wade Miley... and Miranda to start on Thursday

Gotta say I think this is actually a pretty valid post from webbrick.

I wouldn't be quite so quick to dismiss Seattle as "out of the race". They're 4.5 back in the WC and have a decent line-up. I was pretty ambivalent about the trade and didn't mind giving up Miranda, but I do think it's interesting that they're starting hi m right away.

Will be interesting to compare he and Miley's performance down the stretch.

But when Ubaldo and Wright were going out there and struggling, there was very little talk from folks on this board suggesting Miranda come up and be given a shot. I think I saw more people suggest Lee or Gunkel. Despite the fact that we knew we could use a lefty.

Why? They only gave up Miranda. Sorry but that doesn't make sense to me.

It's not really about Miranda - it's because Miley is bad and costs money - about a 9m commitment next year. Miley's 4.98 and 1.35 WHIP are almost identical to what we got so far this year from Tyler Wilson. Except Tyler Wilson costs 500k. Miley is going to be a 4.75ish ERA, 1.35ish WHIP starter in the AL East - maybe slightly better, maybe slightly worse - and you'd don't have to pay 9m for that. You can get it for 500k out of your minor league system in a lot of cases. You can get for a couple million in the offseason if you choose wisely off the scrap heap. Maybe the first guy or two out of the minors, or the KBO, or the Mexican league don't quite match that performance - great you have the money to try 16 more before you spend what you will on Miley.

In Miley, Ubaldo, and Gallardo we've got 33ish million tied up next year in guys we could replace for 5 million today easy if we were even half sensible about it.

Beyond next year - what specifically agitates is we have a chance to get to the World Series. We could use a rotation upgrade and we got the greenlight obviously to add salary. What we settled for is a guy who is a coin flip to be any better than what we could pull out of the minors or sign off the waiver wire - heck he's a coin flip to be any better than Miranda himself.

I hope for our sake Miley does well - I'll be rooting for him - but we have a chance to do something here and it angers me that this is the move we made.

One guy has been worth over 10 wins in a 5+ year MLB career as a starter. The other had the 5th-best starter ERA on a so-so AAA Norfolk Tides team as a 27-year-old.

Yea, you'd definitely prefer the latter. Especially if your goal was to incessantly criticize the Orioles.

Why do I think that if this trade was rumored, didn't go through, and Miranda was starting for the O's your comment would be just as negative?

I'm no fan of Miranda....however by the looks of his ERA Miley was closer to a quality starter his first couple years than the last two.

With that said I think the Orioles did the best they could with their limited resources.

He is being asked to be the back of the end rotation left hander, and that can pitch in the AL East.

He has started 19 games and has an ERA under 5.00, with 1 Shutout Complete Game this season.

He's probably not even the best marginal veteran lefty named Wade on Seattle we could have asked for. We could have asked for Wade LeBlanc, been a coin flip or better to get better performance, likely paid less than Miranda, and not been on the hook for 9m next year.

IMO, I have no heartburn over giving up Miranda. I am floored that Seattle has brought Miranda up to pitch, so soon, and very curious to see how he does.

Tell me more about how bad Miley sucks before he's even thrown a pitch in an Orioles uniform. :rolleyestf:

He is a left handed major league pitcher that goes deep and stays healthy. So far. He's a 200 inning 33 start guy. With a left arm.

Leblanc pitches 5 innings and averages 10 starts a season.

Serious question - why is this a thing? What difference if he throws 200 IP if they aren't particularly good? Nobody says "yeah, that Ryan Flaherty can't hit - but if you run him out there every day he'll get you 500 abs". I understand you gain some roster flexibility by not having to juggle a rotation spot - but if I can piece together 100 ip from starter 1 at a 4.25 ERA and, 50 more from starter 2 at 4.50, and 50 more from starter 3 at 4.50 - and they all cost me a million bucks each - isn't that a lot better than 200 IP at 4.75 ERA from Wade Miley at 9 million?

I'm now done derailing this Miley thread with negativity - I hope he does great here - but to me Wade Miley is like going to a restaurant that has terrible food just because they have big portions.

If we could have gotten that out of our minor league system, don't you think we would have? We tried, and failed, at getting that kind of production out of the back end of our rotation.

    • So since Westburg is apparently still ROY eligible, Cowser and Westburg may project to be the best rookie combination since Fred Lynn and Jim Rice in 1975?
    • There were several and I was one them. I'm  on record as saying I was one of his biggest Apologists . You should feel good about yourself as you were able to see that Means would be imploding before our very eyes( which was an opinion or a guess, which is what I did) as far as feeling bad for me? Dont I'm plenty good enough to know I wont be able to guess right every time
    • Fantastic pickup by Elias and big kudos to O’Hearn for taking advantage of the resources to improve. He’s a great story.
    • Given his injury history and what’s happening right now, Means may make more money as an Oriole next year than as a free agent. He may have to settle for league minimum as a FA but would do better than that in arbitration. Heck, unless he’s effective at least a little this year then the orioles might release him after the season to avoid paying more than league minimum. I hope Means recovers, very much so, but this scenario is possible imo.    ps. I guess I ignored the part where you said if Means thinks he is healthy.
    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
