Luis...........Ouch!!!!

The Orioles entered today's frustrating loss in extra inning in Oakland LEADING ALL OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL in defensive efficiency.

Despite some memorable mistakes that all teams composed of human beings are going to commit, Trembley's club has succeeded in being respectable overall when the bulk of national "experts" and OH posters assumed they would be 100 loss bad.

Mark my words, if they turn over the starting shortstop role to Freddie Bynum, this team will get worse in a hurry. (And I like Freddie Bynum...just not as a starting shortstop)

Do you mean to tell me that people will have the audacity to complain about the shortcomings of the next guy we stick at shortstop after running Luis Hernandez out of town?

I refuse to believe that. This board is a bastion of rationalism and sensibility.

This could end up being true...But the Orioles have to find out if his defense can even be slightly below average and if his offense can be respectable.

Personally, i agree that he isn't the answer..His defense is bad everywhere I think BUT i do think the Orioles need to see if they play him there everyday if he can improve and be good enough.

Personally, i don't think he will hit or field enough to justify starting but I know LH doesn't justify starting, so it is time to look elsewhere.

Is Cedeno still availabe. :)

Personally, I don't think it's going to matter who we put at shortstop if they pick someone in-house. LH, Fahey or Bynum, none of them are Major League Shortstops, IMO.

Given that we don't have any MLB ready short stop prospects in the minors either, we need to bit the bullet and trade for a young MLB ready prospect.

I'd at least make a phone call to the Dodgers or Rockies to see if Hu or Nelson are available. I'd rather give up some excess talent (pitching?) to get talent in return, rather than plug in another AAAA player or pick up some DFA (Uribe?) off the scrap heap.

Well, when a guy screws up, what's to defend?

It's pointless to mention how he's the favorite punching bag... right after he makes a mistake. No point in talking about who kept the rally going with 2 out in the 8th and then scored the go-ahead run. No point in talking about who all helped us lose the game either... about who struck out on 3 pitches with 2 RISP right after LH had scored the go ahead run, or about who made an E to put the tying run on right after that, or who gave up a walk-off dinger, or about the 5 guys who got less hits than he did, or about the various failures to hit with RISP, or etc. What's the point of doing that? All that's doing is bashing other guys, and I don't see how that helps anything. No point in doing that either. So, if you wanna bash LH, have at it. He screwed up, he earned it. Feel better?

Geez, I was just messing around. Hence the ;).

Way to be a buzzkill, man. :P:D

Defensive efficiency? What's your method of measuring this?

Fundamentally speaking, the Orioles have been awful as of late.

Its not HIS method...It is a stat that is kept...Basically, it measures how many balls put in play are turned into outs(at least, i think that's what this is...Am I right BBD?)

Def Eff, or Defensive Efficiency, is the rate at which balls put into play are converted into outs by a team's defense. Def Eff can be approximated with (1 - BABIP), if all you have is BABIP, but a team's actual Def Eff is computed with

1 - ((H + ROE - HR) / (PA - BB - SO - HBP - HR))

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary/index.php?search=def%20eff

2008 AL DEf Eff through 5/6/08

.728 - BAL

.719 - BOS

.709 - OAK

.707 - TBR

.705 - TOR

.702 - CHW

.702 - CLE

.700 - DET

.698 - LAA

.694 - NYY

.689 - MIN

.689 - KCR

.680 - SEA

.670 - TEX

The Orioles figure is also better than all 16 National League clubs. This is a team statistic, and like it or not, Luis Hernandez is a part of that team.

Well based what I've seen out of Luis's defense so far this season that number could be even better if he's sent packing to the Minors.

So you're using a team statistic...to evaluate a single player, especially when that player is Luis Hernandez? His play all around is awful. Fundamentally, the Orioles have been awful. Does that statistic take into account botched double plays? Players staying back on balls, rather than charging them and not getting an out(s)?

Aside from, fundamentally, I'm also talking about base running. Which has been atrocious.

I'm not using a team statistic to evaluate an individual player.

I'm pointing out that this individual player, Luis Hernandez, has been a part of the most efficient defensive in major league baseball so far in 2008 at turning batted balls into actual outs.

Remove him for the weak-winged Cintron or try to "hide" Bynum at the most important defensive position on the field, you're weakening perhaps the greatest strength this overachieving team has.

I wouldn't do that.

Not many want to replace him with Cintron or Bynum. Many would prefer an option outside of the organization.

But if you upgrade the offense and team speed, who is to say you end up a worse team overall???

    • he's not a TOR guy...and never will be.
    • The Verlander trade requires taking on a lot of money and then doing an extension for an older pitcher. And then that older pitcher missed a season with that team (and making a big salary) due to TJ. Are you comfortable with taking those kinds of risks? Oh, the OP was about extensions. No? I guess you are against all long term deals? If so, that is fine. I just have a difference of opinion.
    • The pitching matchups, I have an eye on of if we skip Irvin and throw Grayson on Sunday. Without a change, Grayson would naturally get the Monday-Sunday next week, and miss the ensuing Monday-Thursday Yankees showdown. I think we generally want more Grayson and less Irvin, including against the Yankees, right? The other path would be to let him gas up extra after the Monday turn, and a home series vs. Oak isn't a bad scenario for a spot start.
    • With Elias and Rubenstein across the negotiating table Boras will know he is up against experts in talent evaluation and financial risk evaluation respectively.  This won’t be Buck circumventing Dan to convince Peter to pay his “big hairy guy” Chris Davis.  Parameters will be established and plan B’s will be in place to implement should Elias and Rubenstein choose to walk away from the table.  That being said discussions with Henderson should be the priority play with the Rutschman discussions happening concurrently but at a slower roll.   I don’t think you want Rutschman finding out that Henderson has been approached by the O’s first.
    • I think he will be absolutely for that…but I also don’t think he has to for reasons I have stated in the past.
    • Well first of all, I think you are making the mistake that you have to trade high end assets to get good players.  That isn’t true (see Verlander) Secondly, as you continue to build good farm systems and develop good players, you can’t play them all. Trades have to be made. It’s a perfect use of resources. We aren’t talking about extensions. We are talking about big FA deals and yes, there is something wrong with it because those contracts largely blow up in your face.  It’s an awful use of resources and that has been proven time and time again. Just because the guy has had a good career the first 7-10 years doesn’t mean that it will continue to be as good.  Don’t get lured in by the name. The name doesn’t matter, the production does.
    • Is that your preference OR what you think Elias will do?
