MLB Least Valuable Players? And Nick...

Some of these players used to have skills, they used to be key contributors. One even had a big role as part of a World Series winner. The qualified hitters who finished 2016 with fWARs below zero are as follows:

NAME TEAM G PA HR R RBI BB% K% ISO BABIP AVG OBP SLG WOBA WRC+ DEF WAR
Alexei Ramirez Padres / Rays 145 506 6 38 48 4.2% 12.5% .092 .265 .241 .277 .333 .264 63 -14.5 -2.4
Yonder Alonso Athletics 156 532 7 52 56 8.5% 13.9% .114 .284 .253 .316 .367 .299 88 -11.0 -0.3
Eric Hosmer Royals 158 667 25 80 104 8.5% 19.8% .167 .301 .266 .328 .433 .326 101 -20.4 -0.2
Yasmany Tomas Diamondbacks 140 563 31 72 83 5.5% 24.2% .236 .310 .272 .313 .508 .345 109 -19.7 -0.1

"The biggest surprise on this list is Eric Hosmer, who just a year ago became the face of the 2015 World Series Champion Royals. Throughout his career manning first base for Kansas City, his defensive metrics have shown mixed results from average to dreadful. His first base D this past season was his worst defensive season by both DRS and DEF since 2012.

Hosmer did little to justify his $8.25 million 2016 salary. Though he’s still arbitration-eligible, the Royals were hoping for a step forward from the 3.4-win player they got in 2015."

Nick Hundley's framing skillz?

"Last year alone, Nick Hundley finished with the 3rd highest zBall percentage and the 2nd lowest oSt percentage. In per-game call rate, Hundley ranked 21st out of 22 qualified catchers. Stat Corner also converts calls added into a Run Allowed Average that is assigned to each catcher. Over the course of Hundley’s 6,042 pitches caught, he accumulated a brutal -12.8 RAA. If we use the rough measure of one win being equivalent to ten runs, then it isn’t out of the question to assume that Hundley’s poor pitch framing amounted to a -1.3 WAR subtraction from his overall value. For most of the past decade, that has been par for the course for Rockies pitchers to deal with."

I wonder who our least valuable player is?

Among qualifiers, our least valuable position player was Adam Jones, at 1.4 fWAR.   But that's not too bad (114th out of 146 qualifiers).

Wow, I thought it would be someone like Flarethy, Wright or Wilson. How come you're using fWAR instead of just WAR?

The article only ranked players with enough PA to qualify for the batting title, and ranked them by fWAR.   So, I was just using the methodology used by the author of the article.    If you are going to include players who didn't qualify, then there are 13 Orioles position players less valuable than Jones, with Caleb Joseph the worst at -0.9 fWAR.

There is no such thing as just WAR.

You have fWAR (Fangraphs) and rWAR (Baseball Reference).

I would agree that most Wars are unjust, but there have been some, like perhaps the Revolutionary War, that can probably be considered just.  xD

Ah. I've been going off BB Refence, and they just label it as WAR. I really haven't seen it posted there as rWAR, but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough
