The Washington Nationals, balking at Bryce Harper’s demands in early talks about a long-term contract extension, now are preparing themselves to be without their All-Star outfielder after 2018, a high-ranking Nationals executive told USA TODAY Sports.

The executive spoke to USA TODAY Sports on Monday only on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the negotiations.

Harper, according to the executive, is asking for a record deal that will exceed 10 years in length, and likely pay him in excess of $400 million.

Welp, the Orioles chances of re-signing Manny just plummeted.

Harper is an interesting case.

rWAR by year.

5.1

3.7

1.0

9.9

1.6

I don't see anyone paying 10/400 for that unless he has a couple 7+ years in a row.

Interesting info, Machado's career rWAR is higher the Harper's in less games.  Of course if Harper starts putting up big time numbers closer to his 2015 production than things change.

First off, Harper was hurt last year so numbers are fun and all but....

I wonder how many SABR guys on here don't even watch games on a regular basis....

Second, he wants to be a Yankee. He's smug and obnoxious, so a good fit. I like the Nats, but would love to see him traded for a haul. After he called out the fans for leaving early to catch the metro that closes early...fired me up. Some rich ball player telling me I am not dedicated? Perhaps he should pay the metro to stay open later or STFU.

Unfortunately, I think the Yankees are even now clearing contracts and freeing salary space to try to sign both Harper and Machado after 2018.   I hope I am wrong about Manny.

You are probably right. Why wouldnt they? Manny is one of the more consistent and younger Free Agents to hit the market in recent years if he does become a FA '19. Which is why the Orioles should probably just trade him before then.

My sentiments exactly. If you can't sign him get a great return and accelerate the retool.

MFW I see that Harper wants $400 million.

Honestly , I'd be scared of 300 over 10 years for Manny with the knees. DD should see the writing on the wall and trade him.

Does anyone really believe The Nets are out of the running for resigning him.  It's early.  It's just negotiation talk.  No news here.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Nets have decided he's not worth that kind of money to play in the NBA.
