What if...

What if Manny has yet another gear? - 200 hits, 300 avg, 900 OPS

What if Davis has one of those years?  = 50 homers and 130 RBI

What if Trumbo repeats 2016's offense but hits well vs lefties?

What if Jones and Hardy are healthy all year?

What if Schoop hits for a whole year like  he did in the first half last year? 304/338/509/847

What if Tillman, Gausman and Bundy all pitch like aces?

What if Miley and Jimenez start 30 games  each with 4.50 ERAs?

What if Castillo hits and catches well?

What if Sisco in ready for the majors by mid season this year?

What if the pen repeats 2016?

What if Rickard really  is a leadoff hitter with a high OBP vs lefties and righties?

What if there is a World Series championship just waiting for the O's to put it together?

I may be wrong, but I think if those two happen, we are in the playoffs.

It would be an embarrassment if we didn't make the playoffs. IMO easily a 90+ win team

I would be curious to see how many more games we would have won if we gave up 2 or less runs....

Of course, it would be easy to come up with a parallel list of things that could go horribly wrong.    But it's fun to dream this time of year. I'd really like to see Gausman, Bundy and Schoop make significant progress towards fulfilling their potential.

Truly those three are the hinge on which the end of the Machado/Britton club control era turns.

Everyone else is a role player now - if anyone was going to be the alpha dog on a champion it would have happened already.  But Jones can still put himself in the statue conversation if he can help us get one.

What if Caleb gets an RBI this season?

What if half the Yankees and Red Sox players get taken out by injuries for the season?

What if the Orioles call up Sisco in September and he doesn't hit well?

What if Orioles fans start showing up?

What if Trumbo wins the All Star Game Home Run Derby?

What if Kim never gets a beer thrown at him again?

What if Buck uses Britton in a Wild Card Game?

On balance, of the things that can go right or wrong, I think more things went right than wrong last year.     We had very few key injuries, outperformed our Pythag by several games, and didn't blow a single 9th inning/extra inning save.   We'd be very fortunate to get an equal number of breaks this year.    Our run differential was 29 last year, compared to 20 the year before, and yet we won 8 more games.

They'd probably win about 112 games.  But then again 20 or 25 teams have a comparable list that puts them well over 100 wins if everything goes right.

Everything never goes right.  The 2001 Mariners won 116 games and had five or six below-average players.

I like how everything on this list is best case scenario and if it all came true we'd be half the all star team and then there is Ubaldo and Miley and in a dream world they have a 4.50 ERA. Expectations are low haha

Just two seasons ago in 2015 Ubaldo had 32 start and a 4.11 ERA.

Miley - For four seasons from  2012-2015 he averaged 32 starts per season and never had an ERA over 4.46.

So 30 starts and a 4.50 ERA is a pretty reasonable projection for those two.

I posted the OP to highlight that the O's have the players to go the WS if thing go right.  I don't think any of the projections are not possible.  I agree everything going right is not likely.  But I like the possibility that enough goes right to take the O's pretty far is good.

    • But you think spending money means we are better.  You mentioned Alonso...He will cost 15-20M, at least. He is not better than what we already have yet YOU would feel better because money is spent. If are buying the same product, would you rather pay $10 or $50? Spending less on Tyler Oneill than Alonso to get similar production is just smart.   Everything about your way of thinking is illogical. You don't show any understanding of payroll, how it works, how to spend properly, etc...all you see is the total number and you equate that to winning...which is bs. And btw, you are suggesting that (w/r/t Adames).  The Orioles have Henderson, Holliday, Mayo, Cowser, GRod, Bautista, Cano, Westburg and Kjerstad making about 7M in 2025. You see that as a problem because "we can spend more money and the payroll should be higher" when in fact part of the reason the payroll is low is because the Os have a lot of cheap young talent providing a ton of surplus value. You don't block that or trade that or anything else just so you can feel better about a payroll number because that gives you some false sense of security that "they are trying". The O's ended with a payroll over 100M this year. 40M is coming off of that payroll and then some will be added in because of some raises, a full year of Eflin and some options that will be picked up.  Right now, I would estimate the payroll to be about 82M for 21 players. Of the remaining players, you need 2 starters (one of those 2 starters may already be in the org and they won't be making any money either), 2 bench guys (one of them being a back up C) and a reliever. There is room to spend and they should but the roster is likely 75-80% set. There is only so much room to go up in payroll and they don't need to "go crazy" so that people feel better about things.  That's dumb and foolish.
    • Best hopes to get from back from 91 wins to 100 is for Mayo and Holliday to become above average regular to All Star level players.  Will it happen?  Who knows?  I'm hopeful.  More for Holliday than for Mayo.  The O's will have to spend major money for at least a #2 starter.  Will Rubenstein step up?
    • Nope. Never said or suggested anything like I would rather have Wily Adames over Gunnar. But extending Gunnar would be great! To answer your original question of why am I concerned about payroll is because I want better for the Baltimore Orioles than simply a playoff birth at this point. And I want the team to be relevant in the market so that more fans/people are drawn to support the team. The nickle and diming approach is not attractive to a lot of people/fans. The message it sends is that we are willing to go this far and no further. And historically speaking it does not produce championships. 40+ years and counting is long enough for me.
    • How much can we sign Austin Hays for when Philly non-tenders him?
    • Why do you get so caught up in payroll prices? The Os have Gunnar for 750K next year.  Do you think we would be a better team spending 15-20M on Wily Adames?
    • I struggle to understand the logic of us cost cutting or targeting players who are lower cost. We are what 27th in MLB in payroll? Is the goal to be 30th?
    • I thought Bob Costas was a Cardinals fan he sounds like a bigger Yankees homer than John Sterling.
