Hot Stove Talk at Zion Lutheran Church, 2215 Brandywine Lane, in York, Pa. The seventh annual event will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Guests joining me this year are MASN Sports color commentator Mike Bordick, the former All Star shortstop and member of the Orioles’ Hall of Fame; and MASN Sports panelist and Sirius/XM Radio host Mel Antonen, who has joined me at Zion for the past six years.

It’s a really good time – and it’s for a good cause. The event itself is free, but there will be a freewill offering with all proceeds going toward the church’s youth ministry program. For more information, contact the church at 717-767-4673.

    • My question  What the hell were you thinking letting strikeout king Cowser bat in a pressure bases loaded situation against a left handed pitcher ?
    • Holliday was advertised as a guy with a 70 hit tool.  It is insane how poorly he is at putting the bat on the ball.  With him, I will say there is the possibility that his father is driving some of the approach issues.  It was obvious to me he had an issue with his leg kick.  Finally, it seems like he is changing that.  I would like to know when he was being told to make a change.
    • I think he kept him because the value/cost was acceptable even without a break out year. That might still be the case in 2025.
    • Of course they're going to say this.  I didn't believe them. Adley got hit on the hand on 6/27. At the time, he was hitting 300 with an 830 OPS. In the 2 weeks including that game, he was on tear: 309 with an 894 OPS. The 2 weeks immediately following being hit on the hand? 120 BA, 519 OPS The months after: 132/482 229/625 214/578 He also had some lingering back pain in the middle of August, but these issues started at the end of July in terms of performance.  My take is his hand/wrist zapped his power, he tried to make up for it by using more of his body and that put an extra strain on, say, his back. Being a catcher is already a grueling job, so that didn't help things.
    • I have to agree here. Something is amiss. Uber prospects like Mayo and Holliday should not hit like pitchers when they arrive in the majors. We all expects some bumps, but the Orioles have seen almost every prospect really struggle at times early in their careers after hitting will in the minors.  Even Gunnar, Westburg, Cowser and Adley had to basically learn at the major league level how to hit. Yes, they had different levels or struggles, but I was honestly amazed at how poorly Holliday and Mayo hit at the major league level.
    • A training issue is still an issue with executing the strategy not the strategy in and of itself.
    • Chance. The Padres went from one of the worst teams with RISP to one of the best, despite losing maybe the best hitter in the game. Bryce Harper had an OPS+ of 234 in "late and close" in 2023.  In 2024 it was 84.
