2014: .275/.328/.454, 266 runs, 78 homers, 236 RBI, +34.3 UZR

2015: .249/.300/.419, 242 runs, 72 homers, 225 RBI, -1.4 UZR

2016: .261/.323/.432, 241 runs, 79 homers, 220 RBI, -36.7 UZR

Seems to me that you could argue that overall, our 2016 outfield was the worst of the three.   It's close, anyway, when you factor in the defense.

If you speak UZR.

If our OF broke even on stats like UZR and DRS in 2017, I would consider that a minor miracle.

Adam Jones needs to play back a step, first off.  I don't know who thinks he is, but he's not Willie Mays in his prime or even Adam Jones in his prime.  The best guys I have seen on a regular basis over the last few years (Kiermaier and Pillar) play deep.  It doesn't just help the OF get back on balls over his head better, but provides a significantly better angle on balls hit in the gap.

I think Adam, Seth Smith, and Joey Rickard have the ability to at least be average out there, not that they necessarily will be.  I worry about the 40 or so games Trumbo may have to play in RF and the 120 or so that Kim will be out in LF.

I don't want to see Joey out there either as a starter.

It's doubtful he will be unless there is an injury to one of the other outfielders.  I'm expecting him to be a regular in left with when there is a LHP on the mound and late inning defensive replacement.  Kim, Jones, and Smith is going to be the most common OF alignment.

No we are missing Cruz

We have Trumbo. He replaced most of Cruz's production with the bat. Cruz was not much better than Trumbo defensively. Seriously, we just need a 2 WAR guy with decent OBP and an arm, but apparently those guys do not grow on trees.

Cruz in 2014 was significantly better than Trumbo in 2016.

    • As someone else pointed out, he has always been a high strikeout guy and still found success, and plenty of hitters are very productive despite high strikeout numbers. I would also expect that to improve with experience, but even if this year is fully representative of the player he will be for us, that's still a very solid player. The 2024 AL rookie class is pretty weak though, I won't argue that.
    • Anything at the plate is a bonus. His defense alone warrants playing him right now.
    • If we can get hot from here on out, right through the playoffs, wouldn't that be a blessing and the unexpected.
    • I would expect it’s about easing him in (first game back in field).  They are going to be cautious with him coming back from a concussion.
    • 3 consecutive great starting pitcher games. Playoff performance level. The batshit a bit to a win, hopefully heating up for the next impressive run!
    • Hyde just said hopes Cano is back tomorrow. Soreness. Maybe that explains the 2 pitch outing. ….
    • Norby was hot for awhile but he's back to struggling the past couple weeks.  I think Cowser is who he is to an extent -- a very talented hitter who has always had high strikeout totals.  The league adjusted to his weaknesses and he's trying to adjust back, but it will probably take some time. Holliday just seems like he's not all there yet.  I think the expectations and hype machine messed with his head a bit, and now he's got to work his way back to finding his rhythm and his confidence.  He's only 20. Mayo hasn't had enough at bats. O'Hearn is simply not an every day player.  He's good when used as a role player. Adley is really the only one I'm concerned about at this point.  Some say they think he's playing hurt, but I'm not really buying it.  If he's playing hurt then why is he DHing at all when his bat is lifeless?  If he's hurt then send him down before he has to get sent down for forgetting how to hit.
