Chris Davis Says Hand Is Better, Hopes Orioles Season Is, Too

We all knew that Davis had been complaining about a sore hand, but I didn't know that he had been playing with a dislocated thumb until he mentioned it at Fanfest.   It must hurt a lot to hit a baseball when your thumb is dislocated.    I'm hoping Chris will have a healthier season and a better one in 2017.    Of course, we didn't have many injuries in 2016, and we'd probably be doing well just to remain as healthy overall in 2017 as we were last year.

How much of it falls on Buck for letting him play with the injury?

How much did Buck really know?  Did he know it was dislocated or did Davis just say it was bruised?  And say Davis did sit for 2 weeks and the Os lose more of those games that they actually did in reality?  Then I guess you can also play it that Davis may have had an impact on games that the Os actually lost.

Do you think we had better options who could put up a 3 win season at first? Trumbo?  Maybe.  But then we'd have to replace Trumbo's production in RF.

Davis with a dislocated thumb gave us our best chance to make the playoffs.

The O's do have a trainers and medical personnel.  I find it hard to believe Davis could hide a dislocated thumb for any real period of time.

I wasn't trying to get into wins and losses, just was it Buck's job, as manager, to tell Davis to sit when Davis wanted to play through the injury?

They had Trumbo on the roster who is a pretty decent first baseman.

As I just stated I wasn't talking about impact on wins and losses so much as what falls under the manager's responsibilities.  Should he have stepped in or should he have acquiesced to the desires of the player with the big contract?

I am sure the player could possibly hide the extent of the injury if he was not honest.

But who knows what would have happened had Buck sat Davis... as it sits Os barely made the WC.  But if Davis did hide the extent of the injury then I would say it was on him that he played through it all.

Good thing he didn't have to worry about making contact with so many pitches.  haha.  I kid.  Davis seemed banged up.  Love his comments about Joey Bats being easy to dislike.  I expect Davis to rebound and lead the league in homers.  Combine that with his new GG defense and he could be a MVP candidate.

I'll give him credit for playing through it, and I can see where they were a better team with him at 80% (or whatever) vs him going on the DL.  Main thing is, let's hope it's healed now, and he has a season more like 2013 or 2015 at the plate.  45-50 bombs and a .240+ BA and .350+ OBP would be awful nice to see.  And not at all outside of the realm of possibility.

I always hesitate to judge medical decisions without knowing the details.    Some dislocations heal in 1-2 weeks, some can take 6 weeks.    I'd say if Davis could have recovered fully by taking one trip to the 15-day DL, it probably would have been the right thing to do.   If it was a 6-week injury, maybe not.    We'll never know what Buck knew or didn't know, or what the medical advice was.   So long as it didn't increase the risk of some permanent injury, I don't have a problem with a manager not ordering a player to sit, if he thinks the player is helping the team.
