Camden Depot: Take the Under

Dan Duquette has a knack for finding value on the fringes of active rosters.  He found himself Nate McLouth, David Lough, Nelson Cruz, and Mark Trumbo.  He has had some misses too like Travis Snider, reupping Alejandro De Aza, and strangely trading starting pitching depth for Gerardo Parra.  However, he generally does well with his recycling bin selections.  One major benefit, of course, is that this enables him to bet on breakout candidates while only locking himself in to a one year deal.  A one year deal reduces the upside of a deal, but also greatly controls for any losses.  For a club like the Orioles, a heavy spending lower revenue club, it is difficult to get a payroll locked into big deals (more on this in three years when I talk about Chris Davis).

For his career Trumbo has a .306 OBP vs RHP and .298 vs LHP.

As a DH he is a lifetime .303 OBP and a .761 SLG versus a .332 OBP and .855 SLG as a RF.

I am sure the Os FO looked at these numbers before making the deal, but I think we are going to see a decent amount of Trumbo in the OF this year.

I have no doubt they intend to use him in RF quite a bit. I think most of it depends on Mancini. If Mancini hits well then Trumbo is in the OF....and we need Mancini to hit lefties well or we will be in big trouble. Rumor has it the Red Sox have some left handed pitchers.

Nah they only have 4 quality ones if ERod pans out.

I think the article makes too much of Trumbo's OF/DH splits.    He's due to regress from his career year last season no matter where he plays, but he still has a swing well-built for OPACY and I'm expecting an .800ish OPS with between 32 and 40 dingers.
