NO Girardi

First of all, things happen fast in negotiations, and can change direction at any time. Maybe Buster Olney was right, and then Girardi or MacPhail threw out something that was a deal breaker.

Secondly, why would anyone be surprised if a prospective manager turns the O's down, thinking that there are better jobs somewhere else? Free Agents have been doing that to the team regularly for the last 10 years

I don't get it. I thought this was basically a done deal. What made him change his mind at the last minute?

I'll be happy to have Davey back (provided he doesn't turn us down), but this is still a bummer. :(

Might be the Yanks told him he was their next manager starting this off season?

I am not that disappointed, my 1st choice was DJ. I want to see him finish the job he started all those years ago.

He also turned down the Nats who have a new stadium coming, have new management apparently willing to spend money on player development, but were committed to playing with stopgaps until the young folks arrived. Maybe he saw, or was told, that the Orioles are a few years away/were rebuilding and he's had all of that he wants in Florida. This would not be an insult to the organization, just a personal preference.

I'd like to have had Girardi, but I gotta admit, I feel a little tingly inside when I think of Davey coming back.

I wouldn't even consider anyone else, if Davey really wants the job (although I am impressed by Trembley so far).

Are we ("the Orioles") the girl who can't get a date to the Prom?

At this point we'd be lucky not to start hearing stories of Mayflower vans pulling up to take the O's to Indianapolis.

"I would rather not work than be with the Orioles" is what is being spoken right now in a bar where Girardi is laughing about this with his friends.

The Orioles are the biggest joke in professional sports at this point...

The O's are the boy trying to get a date for the prom.

Joe Girardi is the popular but superficial cheerleader who turns the boy down.

Dave Trembley is the smart, loyal but mousy girl-next-door who has been "just friends" with the boy since childhood, but who is secretly dying for the boy to ask her to the prom.

In the last reel, the girl-next-door gets a new hairstyle and changes her glasses for contacts, and the boy realizes that the right girl was under his nose the whole time.

One of two things happen here in my opinion.

1) Girardi never was interested in the first place and just wanted to put some pressure on the FO's of the Yankees and Cubs.

or

2) Girardi was interested and ready to sign when either the Cubs or Yanks assurred him that a better deal could be presenting itself in the near future.

Oh well...No biggie.

Agreed. Girardi doesn't want the job, oh well. I think Trembley can do an outstanding job if given an opportunity.

I don't want any manager or player who only takes a job here because the job he really wants might open up soon. Good riddance Yankee!!!

    • There’s a good chance McCann starts game one with Burnes. Big roster. We can always move Adley from DH to C late in the game. Lose the DH, but have a big enough bench to just pinch hit and double switch to hide the pitcher’s spot coming up.  So really we’d only be sacrificing 2 ABs from O’Hearn/Mounty/Kjerstad but we get Burnes throwing to his boy every pitch.
    • We would have lost last night regardless due to zero runs scored by the offense. It is worrisome that Cano looked awful in back to back games. After talk about arm soreness. He has been the one reliable guy. Once we fell behind I don't really care how bad Bowman and Baker are. Hopefully they don't even make the roster for the playoffs.
    • Don’t sleep on Povich getting a chance to eliminate the team that traded him away. That kind of stuff matters. The little extra…
    • I do worry about the McCann start although he has been hitting lately, so maybe you can justify it.
    • It’s the 7th inning with Burnes or Eflin on the bump. A tough lefty is coming up. Who you bringing in?  Perez or Coloumbe?
    • My thoughts: - I agree that the Achilles heel is the bullpen and not the offense (especially with Westburg, Mountcastle, Urias, and Kjerstad back). - I also agree that Perez is overused in high leverage situations. This is going to come down to the degree you expect his “clutch” performance to be predictive going forward.  - I second the notion that most good bullpens are built with some degree of dumpster diving.  If you go back to offseason threads, there were not many desired bullpen FA targets (outside of unrealistic ones like Hader) that would have worked out well.  Maybe we haven’t “dumpster dived” well enough as evidenced by the success of Kaleb Ort in Houston. - Jacob Webb hasn’t been sharp since returning from the IL and Bowman has looked shaky his last few times out. - We don’t have a true closer, only a group of mostly effective set-up men in Dominguez, Cano, and Coulombe. - Part of me wishes they would be more aggressive with G-Rod and the Mountain. While we expect the team to continue to contend, you never really know how many times you’ll be back in the playoffs. However, I know in my head they are probably making the right decision. - I also feel like they should be auditioning McDermot, Selby, Young, or Strowd (who has been very good since August after rough Norfolk start). They could option Baker who I think is unlikely to have a path to trusted status after last year’s ALDS performance. This feeling may be mostly driven by dissatisfaction with the current state and wanting something better.  It might be unrealistic to expect options unproven at the MLB level to suddenly step in and be key playoff pieces.
    • Oh if we’re talking about what they will do, I can see it being something stupid like McCann at C and Adley at DH. I do think Mullins has enough veteranosity to outweigh Hyde’s obsession with L/R matchups.
