Amazing how short of a leash some posters are willing to give some of these players but players that have been here for years and not proven themselves they are willing to give opportunity after opportunity. Not even a full season yet for Mullins. When Hays was up in 17 he needed time according to these same posters that want to yank Mullins now. You may want to ask yourselves why that is.

Because Mullins has had roughly six times the PA in which to not look good?  Because Mullins didn't look good in the spring?  Because his defense hasn't been as advertised?  Because he was never as highly regarded as a prospect?

No wait, it's because he's black right?  Is that the point you are trying to make?

Because Mullins has had 239 PA in the majors and Hays only had 60?

Actually, as I’ve said, I think Mullins should get 2 months minimum, maybe more.

A guy like Hays gets every opportunity to prove that he can't play.  A guy like Mullins needs every opportunity to prove that he can.

Might not be fair, but that's how it is.

I mean, where’s the evidence?   The O’s never brought Hays up last year even though they’d burned an option on him, and they didn’t slate him for the OD roster even though he was one of our best hitters this spring.    Meanwhile Mullins made the team despite hitting poorly last year and this spring.

I think Hays had an injury plagued season last year if I'm not mistaken.  Might have been a reason that he wasn't brought up.  And if they're going to play the clock game with Hays, he wasn't going to be on the OD roster no matter what.

But I bet Hays gets more chances in the bigs than Mullins does whenever they feel that he's ready to be brought up.

To be clear, I do not think Hays should have been called up last year.   But I’m just wondering where your evidence is that he’s getting all these chances because of who he is.    He spent about 3 weeks in the majors after bring one of the five nominees for minor league player of the year.    That’s the only chance he’s been given so far.

I'm not sure that's a sign of confidence.

I said "a guy like Hays".  Not Hays specifically.  Meaning, a guy who's a highly ranked prospect, or has a high draft status gets more chances.

That said, it looks like they're playing the clock game with Hays.  They didn't with Mullins.  Different regimes but I don't know how much that matters.  If they're going to play the clock game with Hays, I'm assuming they're going to give him every chance to prove that he belongs before cutting bait.

One thing I think folks agree on is that Buck had favorites: guys he would endorse even if they weren’t very good/ready and other guys he’d ignore even if they were able to help the team. It’s probably why he played Some and didn’t play others.

now there are reasons for most decisions and I’ll not scream too loudly if X player stays or goes. I like Mullins, and Rickard too, but Hays and McKenna would be fine, or Santander and Stewart might be ok if the defense improves a bit.

i just hope this season clarifies who is capable of what, and the FO acts accordingly.

Mullins is up because it’s time to see what he can do. Hays has never played in AAA and is/was hurt.

Mason Williams will probably get a look soon considering he has mlb experience, is LH, and can play all three OF spots.  I think he could be another Dwight Smith type for us.  .700 OPS and decent defense.

But somehow it isn't time to see what Stewart can do?

    • There have been 2-3 times when it seemed logical to call him up but they don’t.   I’ve never understood this thing they have for Baker.  Hey, Cole Irvin is available again!!
    • While we lost some talented players, I think the consensus was some of the players we lost were actually blocking more talented prospects. The loss of Westburg and Urias should have been mostly offset by Holliday and Mayo. Instead, they were truly abysmal.  Povich had some nice moments but he was disappointing as well.  Maybe our expectations were too high - Elias is not going to hit on every prospect, and even the ones that turn out good may take a while to adjust. Still, I think it is fair to have expected more out of Mayo and Holliday since the organization deemed them ready to promote.  In addition to the prospects, you had Adley hit a wall, going from a 6 WAR pace to replacement level, and Cowser and O'Hearn both struggling.  Certainly injuries hurt us, but we should have been strong enough to overcome them. Maybe not to sustain a 105 win pace but I think it is fair to say we should have been able to beat 95 wins and win the division even with the injuries.
    • I was wondering what the knee-jerk reaction would be to an ugly game last night, but the truth is that the bullpen is fine, as is the rest of the team. We lack a true lockdown closer, but we have six arms by my count that are very good relievers in Akin, Perez, Coulombe, Webb, Cano, and Domingez. And you can add Suarez to that list next week, and possibly Povich, who should also make the PS roster as a lefty long relief option to mirror Suarez. Anyway, that game could have and would have gone much differently, IMO, if it were a playoff game. Burnes obviously stays in longer and gets at least through the top of the order if not back down to the bottom third to hand it over to the bullpen. Hopefully we'd be able to scratch out some runs, but that's not the bullpen's fault.  This is an extremely good team with a lead. Let's hope we get on the board early and often starting tonight.
    • Boy, Brandon Young who has some decent numbers at Norfolk must be injured or unimpressive to the front office to not even get a look for this bullpen. Bryan Baker is almost a waste of a call up.
    • Povich is off vs Detroit at least. Even if they carry a 9 man pen, Doubt that 5 will be left handers
    • I hate to say it because they are all eligible to succeed or fail ( DC just coming back ), would probally go with Soto.
