TT: Miley to DL, potential opening day roster, April moves

The Orioles placed Wade Miley on the DL today, but he will be eligible to pitch on his 1st start of the year on April 9th. This should allow the Orioles to carry an extra player until then at the very least. Looking over the roster I think there's a pretty good chance that both Trey Mancini and Craig Gentry make the opening day roster. Gentry could come in for defense late in games for Seth Smith or Mancini, assuming Mancini will now play RF against lefties. With Tillman going on the DL and the Orioles not needing a 5th starter until April 15th, here's how i see the roster shaping up over April.

Opening Day

Starters: (3)
Kevin Gausman
Dylan Bundy
Ubaldo Jimenez

Relievers: (8)
Zach Britton
Darren O'day
Brad Brach
Mychal Givens
Donnie Hart
Vidal Nuno
Tyler Wilson
Logan Verrett (Asher could still be in mix)

Catchers: (2)
Welington Castillo
Caleb Joseph

Infielders: (5)
Chris Davis - 1B
Jonathan Schoop - 2B
JJ Hardy - SS
Manny Machado - 3B
Ryan Flaherty - UTL

Outfielders: (6)
Hyun Soo Kim - LF
Joey Rickard - LF
Adam Jones - CF
Seth Smith - RF
Trey Mancini - RF
Craig Gentry - OF defense/PR

DH: (1)
Mark Trumbo

Verrett or Wilson will go down when Miley returns depending on who is still available innings wise as of April 9th. Gentry or Mancini goes on April 15th when another starting pitcher will need to come up. When Norfolk starts up, whatever pitcher lines up to pitch on the 15th will most likely be the penciled in starter for that game.

Looks like the Norfolk shuttle will be pretty busy in the first month of the season at the very least.

Norfolk shuttle will be more active than last year IMO

Yep, as soon as I saw the new CBA shortened the DL to 10 games, I thought to myself that Buck and Dan would be able to play all kinds of games with it and the Nofolk/Bowie shuttle.

My only hesitation is with Verrett.    He's been more bad than good this spring.

Ynoa definitely out pitched him, but I think they want Ynoa to pitch every five days at Norfolk. He could be in contention to make the April 15th start along with Aquino. Verett is basically the second long reliever who will most likely be the guy who goes back to Norfolk when Miley come off to DL unless Wilson just pitched a bunch of innings.

Probably. Who do you think comes up as the 5th starter or if Miley misses a start?

Yep, making the team as a long man is a sign you are OUT of the running for the #5 starter.   Buck wants whoever the #5 is to be pitching regularly in minor league camp / Norfolk, not sitting on the bench in Baltimore waiting for a game situation to dictate a long reliever is needed.

By late next week we'll have an idea of who they have in mind.   Whoever starts Norfolk's opener on the 6th could have a short outing on the 10th on 3 days rest and then come back on the 15th as the 5th starter.   But someone who pitches for Norfolk on the 7th and 8th is probably out of the running for being the #5 on April 15.

It will be one of Wright, Ynoa, Aquino, or Lee.   Your guess is as good as mine.   Since the #5 starter is first needed April 15 vs the righty-power-laden Blue Jays, I would rule out the two lefites.   Then you have Ynoa who performed well in spring training, and Wright who Buck knows, for better or worse.

I would make Ynoa the favorite, though what they do in minor league camp and Norfolk between now and then could change things.

I'd either put down Ynoa or Aquino. Wright sucks against Toronto

It was the compensation for no 26th man.

He's not making the team. DD said Wilson today in the 2nd inning.

All this is looks right BUT as I keep saying LOTS OF MOVING PARTS/IRONS IN THE FIRE-there is a very good chance DD pulls a person or two off waivers.

Worley likely signs to a minor league deal with opt-out (he had a REALLY bad ST, O's probably want to be sure he is okay)

What I want to see-Dillion Gee or Pelfrey signed with incentives (likely 40-man move) Dariel Alvarez taken off.

Both Nuno and Wilson have options so both of their spots are VERY precarious depending on what comes across the wire. These spots are not in stone.

If Gentry gets sent down, wouldn't he have to go through waivers?
