Orioles Sign Edwin Jackson to a Minor League Deal

Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have agreed to a minor league contract with Edwin Jackson pending a physical.

Per Encina, Jackson's deal will include a June 1 opt-out clause. Assuming he passes his physical, he will report to extended spring training on Thursday. The veteran right-hander split his 2016 season between the Marlins and Padres. He struggled on the whole, posting a 5.89 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 61/41 K/BB ratio in 84 innings. With the Orioles, he will serve as organizational depth, but could see major league time as the season progresses. Even if he does work his way into the mix with the O's, there is no fantasy intrigue here.

Good signing.  Not a starter any more.   Had a good season as a reliever in 2015.   If they can get him back to that performance then they have some.

2015,  3.07 ERA, 55.2 IP, 44H, 1.168 WHIP

Yep,def not a starter but no bad minor league deals. I like it.

I think the odds are long that we see him in an Orioles ML uniform this year.

If we do, something has probably gone terribly wrong.

It seems to me that every year there are at least a couple of guys who end up playing some games for us that you never would have expected going into the season.   Sometimes they're young guys and sometimes they're old guys.   So I wouldn't say that Jackson pitching for us was a sign that something had gone horribly wrong.     We had guys like Logan Ondrusek and Brian Duensing pitch for us last year.

True, but I actually like our choices in the minors, both rotation and bullpen before he ever gets a chance.   I could probably think of at least 3 starters I'd go to before him and at least as many RH bullpen guys.

As of now, I'd agree with you.   I'm just saying that if Jackson got called up at some point, it wouldn't necessarily be because something's gone horribly wrong.    Maybe Jackson pitches lights out and earns it, rather than getting a call-up by default.

It's like the Johan Santana dream all over again.  Oh, What could have been?

If Jackson makes an appearance with the Orioles, it'll be his 12th major league team, one shy of Octavio Dotel's all-time record.

That's going to make it a tough choice for his HOF cap! ;)

Loved Duensing's surprise one batter/one K appearance in the play-in game last year. (Not sarcastic.)
