Bowie Baysox 4/13/2017 Recap

Bowie had their home opener last night. As per the trend, it ended in some dramatic fashion.

Here are some observations from it:

Mullins is FAST! He tracked some balls in center field that he made look easy. He also ripped a ball down the first base line in the 9th that went for an easy double. Could of been a triple and he would of made it, but in the 9th, don't risk it.

DJ Stewart is going to be an interesting adventure in the outfield. He misplayed a ball early in the game off the wall that led to 2 runs. He did make a good play off the wall later in the game and made a strong throw to second and almost cut down the runner. At the plate, he was really fooled. Had a single to center on a swing that wasn't really for contact, more of a "oh crap!"

Austin Wynns went 2-3 and had a walk. He singled in the 6th to start the 4 run inning and scored on a Glynn Davis single. He was solid behind the plate, as the Bowie pitchers liked throwing 55 footers. Allowed a stolen base later in the game. Guy had a HUGE jump (almost past the second baseman by the time the ball got to home) and Wynns made a very strong and accurate throw right on the first base side, cleat high.

John Means had a rough night. Low on strikes, high on balls, and was hit hard. Harrisburg was making very solid contact but the defense held up. Had a lot of pitches in the dirt that weren't even close.

Lucas Long had a solid outing in relief, striking out several and making them look bad in the process.

Jesus Liranzo was 1 strike from getting a save and instead gave up a home run that probably didn't land until the game was over. The next batter launched one to right also, but it was only warning track power. About 10 degrees warmer and it would have been a home run.

Aderlin Rodriguez is a strong dude. He had 2 pop outs to the outfield that he JUST missed. An 1/8 inch higher on the ball and he would have launched them past the woods. Instead, he had 2 very loud, very high pop ups. Once he gets his timing down, which I think will be soon, expect him to trot around the bases a bunch.

Glynn Davis might be batting 9th, but don't sleep on him. Davis is one of the fastest players on the team and put the bat on the ball pretty good. Drove in the first 2 runs. Had a groundout to third that was hit solid and the third baseman made a strong throw, yet Davis was only out by inches (his foot was coming down as the ball hit the first basemans glove.)

Audrey Perez is a decent batter who can make some adjustments. He was DHing last night and struck out looking in his first appearance. He looked fooled in his next at bat too, but adjusted and had a 2 run single later on. He tried taking second on a wild pitch but was thrown out by about 89 feet.

Overall, Bowie looked good. The bats are there, it's mainly the pitching, which seems to be effecting the entire organization. Oh, and Sean Coyle is incredibly short in person.

Bowie is leading the EL in just about every offensive category right now.    I'm sure they'll cool off, but their offense has been fun to watch.

I can see why. I've been following them, but hadn't really compared the stats to others. I know a lot of people were super excited about Frederick, but Bowie looks like it can be dominant. Especially if a few players get flipped (either from Norfolk or Frederick.) From 1-9, they can all hit and get on base very well.

Rodriguez is a monster.  Should have been in Double A last year so it is no surprise that he is mashing.

The two issues with Rodriguez last year was his defense and his strike out ratio. He didn't have to make any plays last night, so I can't comment on how his defense is now. I CAN say that his swing last night looked better than it did in Frederick and I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up with 30 if he is healthy all year.

I'll be at the game on Tuesday, so if anyone wants any notes on a particular player, let me know who to keep an eye on for you all.
