Fry is doing what he did in Bowie the last 2 seasons and Norfolk. I was high on him but couldn't pinpoint what exactly he was doing to get people out. Either way, very happy to see him succeeding

(vs. D-RAYS, 8/07)

 

Fry inherited a mess tonight, and pitched as well as one could have asked.

 

He came in with the bases loaded and nobody out, and the Orioles clinging to a 3-2 lead that looked like it would surely go down the drain.

He immediately induced a double play groundout (which allowed the tying run to score), and then struck out Kevin Kiermaier to (almost amazingly) keep the game tied at 3. 

He then struck out the first 2 batters in the following inning ........ giving him 5 recorded outs while facing only 4 batters !!!  ) O.o

You have been and props to you. I saw him a couple of times when he was first acquired and was less than impressed, but his slider has really improved from what I saw and his fastball command has improved while gaining a tick or two.

I think he's got a real chance of being a piece out in the pen.

Kidding aside, Fry > Hart FWIW (SSS)  

Fry's stuff is much better than Hart and he certainly has a much better fastball. Hart sits 87-89 while Fry sits 91-93. Hart was effective when he was commanding his good left-on left slider but he lost that consistent command of the pitch and that's when his ability get batters out consistently left as well.

Fry may not be a stud out there (he was last night until he almost gave up the game winning home run), but his slider has improved enough for him to have some success.

I don't think it's close.   Fry's stuff is nasty.   Hart is one of those guys that needs to be perfect with his location.  Fry has enough zip on the fastball that he can get away with a mistake or two.

You're right about his improvement. In Bowie, nothing stuck out to me, but he just kept getting outs. Mainly contact outs, but outs none the less.

He just comes in and gets out. The stats are good too. He seems pretty polished. We don’t have many leads late but it looks like the new “A” squad of the pen is,

SU: Fry

SU: Castro/Wright

CL: Givens

I’m pretty sure we’ve DFAd Fry before and kept him. Just goes to show you that top prospect lists aren’t the best of predictors, especially for relievers. Scott might be our 4th best LH option next year.  With Bleier, Fry, Luis Gonzalez ahead of him.

      Please don’t compare OAA and dWAR.  OAA and dWAR are not comparable stats.  First of all, OAA is measured in outs, while dWAR is measured in wins.   That’s a very different scale.   Second, OAA is not adjusting for difficulty of position, while dWAR contains a significant adjustment for position.   Third, OAA measures range but doesn’t measure the throwing aspect of being an outfielder.   If you want to compare apples to apples (and I assume you do), Statcast has a statistic called Fielding Runs Value that converts OAA plus the throwing aspect into runs.   Cowser has a +10 FRV, which as the names implies, is measured in runs.  FRV feeds directly into the fWAR calculation, along with a factor that adjusts for difficulty of position, which for Cowser is measured at -4.1 runs.   Meanwhile, rWAR uses Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), which is directly comparable to FRV.  Cowser has a +3 DRS, not as good as his +10 FRV.   Those are the comparable stats, and the 7 run difference converts to about 0.7 WAR. That’s the main difference between Cowser’s 4.1 fWAR and 3.2 rWAR. I see that after Gil’s poor performance yesterday, Cowser now leads him in both rWAR (3.2 to 3.1) and fWAR (4.1 to 2.2).   So, I like Cowser’s chances.

      Our key players aren't ready to uphold their part of the deal yet, but the Peak Orioles Teams sometime this decade against these Dodgers before they get too old would be an amazing matchup.      I've only gotten to watch most of a Dodgers game the past week or so, and one of the impressions even though they are HOF and still near the very best is that Freddie and Mookie are fraying some as time continues its unbeaten streak. I think we're the likeliest club of any of the 29 others to be able to out-talent the Dodgers anytime soon.
