Excellent Tom Boswell column on Matt Wieters, Nats and O's

The O's need to steal a little of the OBP additive they're putting in the water down in DC.  Wieter's OBP is .373 right now for the Nats.  It was .302 last year w/ the O's.

I feel like Wieters has often been a fast starter.

Wieters could have stayed here and signed the same contract he ended up signing with the Nats.  He and Boras tried to hijack our offseason.  He could have easily stayed.  It taints his Oriole legacy just like how Markakis is tainted.  Both could have stuck around and rode things out with the core, but they chose to take the biggest contract out there.

I don't care for Boswell at all, and for that matter the whole sports team at the washington post.  Let them have MW, Wizards, Redskins, Georgetown, and the fake red nation.  I'll take the O's, Gary Williams and the Terps.  At least the post found their match when it comes to people overrated and terrible at their jobs, Dusty Baker.

Umm. I know I shouldn't ask, but would you mind backing that statement up with some data and not just personal opinion? I'm sincerely curious about how you came to that conclusion.

That may be true.  I wonder if that is the case for most catchers.  It is an exhausting position, especially for someone with a large body type like Wieters.

Boswell is extremely well respected writer, sad to see your tainted glasses dont allow you to see that.

Funny that College Park is extremely close to DC, but you chose to ignore that tidbit.

I would love to see evidence that MW could have stayed here.

Nothing wrong with opinions, we all have them.

But, you write it as fact and I do not believe it correct.

For years, the Washington Post covered the Orioles, better than the Sun did, but heck, thats just an opinion. :)

That's a surprising take.   Are you suggesting that the Post covers Georgetown more than it covers Maryland, or prefers one over the other?     I've certainly never had that impression.

A lot of Terp fans think this way.  They gave Gary an extremely hard time.  "Cant win the big one" thing.  They loved the JTIII hire and hated Turge.

I think they've covered the Terps too harshly like a pro team and that contributed to a lot of local kids leaving.  They're a GU paper.

Gary did win the big one. and they gave him lots of love for rebuilding the program and with his success, pumped a lot of money back into Terp sports world.

Maryland is always going to have a harder time recruiting against the party schools, free cars, etc.

Interesting.   I don't see it that way, but I don't avidly follow the Terps (especially since they moved to the Big 10), though I like to see them do well.

I like Matt.   He did a good job for the O's for years.  He couldn't meet the unrealistic expectation that were set for him but he was a Gold Glover, an All Star and a leader that helped the O's turn  into a winner.  His injury hurt him his last few years with the O's.   And his choice of Boras as an agent made it seem in FA that a contract was more important than staying with the O's.

If Boras and Matt would have told the O"s he would sign a one year contract  with a option before the  O's signed Castillo I wonder what would have happened.  But that was not to be.   Boras was going to extend his search for the big Wieters  contract way into 2017 and that put Dan in a position of needing to move on.

The O's did the right thing is signing Castillo on December 16th and letting Matt and Boras continue to search.  Matt did not sign until February 24th.  I am glad the O's were not in that negotiation.   Matt landed softly with a short term contract with the Nats. Not what Boras planned but a franchise that pays which should be good for Matt in the future.   I wish him well.

    • What I'd like to see in the next game Holliday plays, is for him to keep his eyes following through on the ball when he swings. In the last game I saw, he was yanking his head off the zone when he swung and couldn't see the bat to the ball. He was missing wildly and it wasn't even competitive. So, keep your eye on the ball! Follow all the way through! If your swing is so violent that it's yanking your head off the sight of the ball, then adjust your mechanics because you can't hit what you can't see!
    • What a great example of pedantic! Please tell us you meant to do that. I honestly can’t tell these days.
    • Well it certainly doesn't look like he'll be winning Rookie of Year award. And if we send him down for like the tiniest amount of time, we get him for another year, right? I think if this poor hitting continues it's financial mismanagement not to send him back down. Grayson got sent down and came back way better.
    • He certainly isn't a bust but I wasn't happy with the pick at the time and I don't love using the second overall pick for that type of player profile. Westburg signed for slot so he's irrelevant but Mayo was a great use of the money saved.
    • Think Heston will be the next call up. Mayo’s K/BB ratio is poor and I think they’ll want to see that even out. Stowers and Norby have seen their numbers slip a bit.  It will likely take an injury to an outfielder or first baseman, but I think we see HK next.
    • I have to laugh at some of my pre-draft thoughts as well as others. I will say on behalf of myself and some others is that what we did not understand then was what the Orioles brain trust knew to be their model, and what they best developed. What traits they were looking for is an important thing to know, in hindsight anyway. And really, the Jackson Holliday leap in development was not something most of us heard anything about until about a month before the draft. I saw him the previous summer and I cannot say he was all that impressive, but it was only one look. His physicality took a big jump after that.  I will also add that we’re never going to know what would have happened if they drafted Austin Martin, Jones, Lawler, Lacy, etc. Their development could well have been different as O’s. The funny part of this board, in general, is the absolute certainty some have in their opinions and how eager they are to trash Elias and staff. There is plenty of humility to go around, now that things have played out. It’s fun to finally have a truly great front office and ownership group, and a stacked stable of horses.
