My guess is that Buck didn't want Manny  to get in a verbal battle with CB Buckner and get thrown out.

Weird. If the consequence of a verbal battle would have been Manny getting tossed, holding him out of the game would have had the same outcome, guaranteed. If it wasn't the thumb, maybe Buck was genuinely displeased with Manny's reaction? 

Buck sure did a convincing job of covering for Manny if that was the real reason.

That would have set up what happen the day before.  Buckner called Manny out on a check swing to end the game and Manny stood at home plate and yelled at Buckner.

I understand that but if you can't trust Manny to keep his cool for one at bat...

Would depend on where the team is.  If they are contending you probably have to wait until the offseason.

I agree. Because Manny has never gone without a hit or an RBI in any game during his career.
