I don't understand this point. The Ubaldo money is spent. Having spent that money, the Orioles should be deciding what roster gives them the best chance of winning this year (and, to a very minor extent, in future years). The difference in cost between keeping Ubaldo on the roster and DFAing him is the additional cost of paying someone else to take up that roster spot. That almost certainly would be more time for the Norfolk guys -- Verrett, Bleiler, Asher, etc. That's a small number. I don't know what it would be, maybe $500,000.  (I guess it's possible the extra spot would go to a more costly non-pitcher, but that's entirely within the Orioles' control.)

I don't understand the view that the Orioles are unwilling or reluctant to eat $8 million, or whatever Ubaldo's prorated salary is for the balance of his contract. That money has already been eaten. I do understand the desire to have another team take on some of that obligation. And I also understand the concern that if Ubaldo is DFA'd, he might get picked up and reappear as Good Ubaldo (in the worst case, he'd do that pitching against the Orioles).  But the chances of both look pretty slim right now, and are unlikely to get much slimmer. To me, they're just about zero. (Wouldn't we like to face Ubaldo down the stretch. I think we would.)

So we're back to the question whether the team is better off with Ubaldo on the roster or with an additional roster spot for which it will have to spend (I'm guessing) an additional $500,000. For me, that has become an easy question.

LA LA LA LA fingersinmyears! No offense but I look at this like a Judge. Sure I'd like to see X and X and X happen. But I only view what DD is likely to do. What Big Peter will allow or force him to do. Divorced from the process... I just try to follow the current.
