Duquette couldn't have anticipated that Ubaldo, Asher, Arrieta, Matusz, Wright, and so many others would be as bad in-game as they are. On paper any of them looked somewhat serviceable with a decently high ceiling, before we knew what they were capable of (or not capable of).

If anyone in the organization deserves blame other than the players themselves, it might be the coaching. We seem to specialize in developing head case pitchers who immediately right the ship when they leave. Very few exceptions who are immune to the psychic "yips rays" transmitted by our coaches.

Nonsense. That is Duquette's job.  When you pick between two pitchers on the free agent market and you pick Ubaldo rather than Ervin Santana, then you are responsible.  When you jettison Miggy Gonzalez to save 5 dollars because you are confident that Tyler Wilson, Mike Wright, Ubaldo are better, then you are held responsible.  When you trade for a Bud Norris, then you are responsible.  When you sign a washed up Gallardo, then you are responsible.

How many times do our pitching matchup heavily favor us going in and we blow it and make their struggling starter look like Cy Young??

Our strikeout rich lineup is often baffled by guys they haven't seen before and has no patience to figure new guys out.
