2016 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase   Aug 19, 2016

PG Grade: 9

Jacob Brown is a 2017 RHP/3B, OF with a 5-10 185 lb. frame from McLeansville, NC who attends Northeast Guilford High School. Medium build and frame, athleticism, and room to add strength. Posted a 7.22 time in the 60 yard dash. Primary right handed pitcher, side step start into delivery, works over front side, long arm action, crossfire element, short stride and threw from a high three quarter arm slot. Attacked hitters around the zone with an uptempo delivery and aggressive approach on the mound. Fastball comes out of hand clean with mostly true action and angle to the lower third of the zone at 83-86 mph. 11/5 shaped curveball with depth, slows arm for the pitch slightly with ability to throw for strikes. Slider showed 10/4 shape with much tighter spin and replicated arm speed for swing and miss. Also showed a changeup at 80 mph with fade to the lower third. Very impressive feel for pitching and generated uncomfortable at-bats. Impressed as a secondary outfielder with a long, clean arm action, worked well through the ball with momentum, and big arm strength up to 87 mph. At the plate, stated with a slightly open base, high hamd set, active hand set, high back elbow, and a leg lift timing mechanism. Line drive swing plane with intent to drive the ball. Occasional leverage and could use additional lower half. Showed good bat speed with loud impact off the barrel with consistent up the middle and pull side contact. Good student. Named to Top Prospect List. Verbally committed to High Point.

Brown isn’t one of the top draft prospects in a loaded state of North Carolina, but that doesn’t make his home run above any less impressive. The fans knew it was gone, the opposing pitcher knew it was gone, and Brown certainly knew it was gone. In addition to that, you can see the effectiveness of Brown’s curveball, getting two swings and misses around a fastball away for a strikeout.

Brown is committed to High Point, and with Northeast Guilford this season is hitting .500/.568/.937 and has posted a 1.09 ERA in 25.2 innings with 36 strikeouts to 10 walks.
