I would be OK with him giving up 1 run through the first 5 innings on a solo home run.

Most alarming thing for me w/ Bundy is his shrinking strikeout rate. I don't think it's a coincidence that it's directly linked to his drop in velocity.

2016 (Max vs. Average velocity)

  • 4 seam: 98.6, 94.6
  • Changeup: 90, 85.3
  • Curveball: 80.4, 76.8
  • Sinker: 98.3, 93.9

2017 (Max vs. Average velocity)

  • 4 seam: 95.8, 91.9
  • Changeup: 87.8, 83.3
  • Curveball: 79.1, 74.4
  • Sinker: 94.2, 91.3

That's a difference in 3 mph on his 4 seamer, 2 on his changeup, 2 on his curveball and nearly 3 on his 2 seamer.

Now, that could be the fact that he's trying to go deeper into games vs. last year starting off as a reliever. But we haven't seen any giddy-up on his fastball as evidenced by the a 3 mph drop on his max velocity.

His last 6 starts have been a huge cause for alarm.

.275/.350/.600 - .950 OPS, 6.61 ERA, 31 1/3 IP or averaging 5 1/3 IP.

10 homers. That's a 2.9 HR/9. A 1.468 WHIP.

He looks a lot like Tommy Hunter right now to be honest. Hopefully this is just a blip due to overuse and the first time starting the year as a starter, but he looks pretty bad right now.

That's asking a lot. The larger question is, can he get through five innings and give the Orioles a chance at a W ???

o

Correct.

He can give up a solo home run with no additional scoring through 5 innings, which would be good.

Or, he could keep the ball in the park and give up 5 runs on 3 doubles, 5 singles, and 2 walks through 5 innings, which would not be good.
