Cubs acquired LHP Jose Quintana from the White Sox for OF Eloy Jiménez, RHP Dylan Cease, 1B Matt Rose, and INF Bryant Flete.
The first big trade-deadline domino has fallen, with the defending World Series champs securing a top-flight starting pitcher as they aim to rebound from a disappointing first half. Quintana owns a 4.49 ERA in 104 1/3 innings this season, but he was in a nice groove leading into the All-Star break and the 28-year-old left-hander carries a very team-friendly contract that could keep him in a Cubs uniform through 2020. In return, the White Sox get more high-upside talent for their suddenly-stacked farm system. Jimenez is among the top prospects in the sport, and Cease was recently rated the Cubs' No. 2 prospect by Baseball America

I see this backfiring massively for the cubs.

Seriously - isn't this a huge overpay?? Hopefully its indicative of a good sellers market.

Yeah Theo is gutting their farm system that was once the best in baseball.  I don't think this makes a big movement for them either.   If he cost that much this will be another year to be sellers.  The Dodgers are interested in Britton from reports.  If he pitches well then you have to move him at the deadline to them for some prospects.

That's Eric Bedard levels of overpay

I guess JQ has had some better seasons than I remembered. Pitching to a 3.2 ERA in the AL ain't bad. But he's pushing 4.5 now. Bit of a gamble by the Cubs

No, because you are also taking into account previous track record, where Quintana was performing as an ace behind Sale, as well as his affordable contract long-term.  The Cubs have Q for the next four post-seasons, which is essentially their window with the current core of young players they have.  This also closes the door on Arrieta returning as well.

I can't believe people still undervalue Quintana this much even after all the articles about how under appreciated he is. He's solidly a top 25 pitcher in the game.

He's 28, under control for 3.5 more years, thrown more than 200 innings in 4 straight years and will make less than 10M a year on avg from 2018-2020. He's also a pretty good pitcher

MLB Rank since 2014 among pitchers with at least 500IP

ERA: 3.47(22nd)

FIP: 3.31(16th)

fWAR: 16.6(8th)
