Prospect Power Rankings 7/17

Thanks for the updated prospect rankings!

Where would you rank Gassaway?   He has a high batting average and doesn't strike out too much, but the home runs and slugging are down from last year.

What is considered a good pop time?   Breazeale is listed with 2.0 pop times, but I remember reading a thread where Sisco's pop times are in the 1.97 to 2.08 range.

2.0 is an average pop time. for a major league catcher, but the best ones are usually lower.

As for Gassaway, He's hitting for average, but he sells out power for the average and struggles with offspeed pitches. He's also a below average defensive outfielder. He doesn't bring much to the plate besides the ability to hit for a soft average.

Is it normal for college catching prospects to improve their pop times as they develop?   Does he seem like someone that can develop into a plus defender?

With footwork improvements a catcher can certainly improve pop times a bit.

Breazeale has 9 passed balls already, and when there aren't guys on base he lets balls go to the backstop without attempting to catch them. Do you have any thoughts/reports on his defense as a whole?

He does execute pitch outs well, the last two runners he threw out were fast runners on pitch-outs.

The names I'm surprised by placement or omission are Gassaway, Reyes and Breazeale.

Gassaway is 5 months younger than Breazeale and having a solid season two levels ahead. Don't see how they could be that far apart, unless Gassaway is literally 31.

To say Reyes was only hitting a little bit feels like an understatement. At 20 years old, he was slashing .321/.361/.436 in Hi-A. While a small sample size, these were better than his breakout 2015. Breaking his hand punching a wall is as stupid as it gets, but on the field he was showing the goods.

Phenomenal content. I love the fact that Akin, Wells, & Sisco are guys who moved down despite playing very well/well/well enough; to have guys that far behind Sisco pass him because of Their play, rather than his, is very encouraging. A guy moving from 10 to top 2, from 17 to 6, from 20 to 7 and from 5 to 1 is an impressive jump.

I thought Mullins was a top 10 guy after ST, but to see him in this top 10, ahead of Sisco & after a draft is pretty exciting. We need a lead off guy, it would be nice if it was Mullins obviously.

I've thought of Mountcastle as our top prospect but Hays sounds pretty nice defensively which gives him an edge. It's hard to believe how well these two hit. I think it would be easy to make a case for each as a top 25 bat in all of baseball, but that is clearly not what most think ..yet. Mountcastle is going to set a record for doubles, he's just incredible. These two are as enjoyable to follow as Manny & Schoop were.

Liranzo, Lowth, & Curran are guys I have big hopes for along with the Hall boys. I think Adam Hall will be special. I'm excited about this group and I'm grateful for the article, TO.

Breazeale may have some issues but that's a nice pick so far. Fenter is another guy I'm looking forward to seeing back. Love the Fent. Bishop getting signed....it's not so bad on the farm these days. Lots to look forward to.

In the five games I've watched I haven't seen any of that, but that is concerning.

I'm not a Gassaway or Reyes guy. Plus, remember these are power rankings, not official prospect rankings. Reyes wasn't showing much power with the average and the few games I saw him he still swings and misses by about a foot on breaking balls.

Whatever "nagging" injuries Wynns has, he belted his 6th home run of the season tonight.

Only other Orioles affiliated players to homer? Shane Hoelscher and Tanner Kirk.

Slim night for the long ball.

2 doubles for my favorite senior sign, Mason McCoy. Now batting .308/.412/.487 with more walks than strikeouts.

    • I mean I do agree with the many people who say here that if Cowser or Kjerstad or some other hitter emerges as good or better than Santander, then yes of course it makes sense to trade him.   But I just don't trust prospect rankings.  Don't assume a player will be as good as high as he ranked until he proves it over a period of time.  In 2016 Jorge Mateo was the Yankees top prospect, just ahead of Aaron Judge -- just to name one example.  For this reason I think Santander hangs around a little awhile -- unless the O's trade for or sign a replacement outfield bat prior to the season -- in addition to trading Santander.
    • But the Rays did lock up some of their best hitters -- mainly Evan Longoria and Wander Franco.  I know Santander is not at that level, but I think there's a good chance Santander is with the team to start next season.  I think it's a mistake to assume someone is ready to take over for him until he proves it.  If not then trade for or sign someone who is -- if he must be traded now or pretty soon.  I don't trust prospect rankings.  In 2016 Jorge Mateo was the Yankees top prospect, just ahead of Aaron Judge.   Also, the Orioles don't really have the pitching in the minors the way the Rays always seem to.  Can't imagine Means or any decent pitcher getting traded for that reason.  And for a long time the Rays weren't a very good hitting team, which I think is a big reason the Rays never tried to lock up their position players until guys like Evan Longoria started to emerge, though there may be a bit more to it than that.
    • 49ers QB Brock Purdy had UCL repair with InternalBrace. Here’a a summary comparing the two. I’m sure Bautista and his medical team will closely consider the best course for his circumstance.    https://www.armoredheat.com/armored-heat-blog/tommy-john-vs-ucl-repair
    • Building on some of the other posts, the ‘83 Orioles lost 5 of their last 7, giving up 40 runs in those seven.  In 9 postseason games they gave up 12 total runs. I have no idea if the O’s bats will wake up or struggle.  I have no idea if the bullpen can get tough outs without a weapon like Bautista available.  And I have no idea how the starters will perform in the intensity of the postseason.   But unlike fans of 22 other teams next Saturday we can find out!
    • To me, just winning the AL East division was a great accomplishment in itself!
    • I'm talking about trading one of our starting outfielders to make room for one or two of our top prospects and replenish our farm system at the lower levels. Elias has been great at finding great young talent. Not sure we need to sign any free agents, at least expensive ones. If we're going to spend big money it should go to Adley or Gunnar.
