I really want Hays to be the guy, but he hasn’t earned it yet.   Struggled last September, struggled this spring, is off to a slow start at Bowie and hasn’t played AAA.    He needs more time.  

As to Trumbo for Markakis, there’s no way Atlanta would do that.   They have great OF prospects in the minors, no DH in the NL, and a great 1B.    Trumbo makes no sense at all for them.   Markakis is a respected leader on that team, as he was here.    And I don’t think he and Trumbo are anything close to a “wash” defensively.    Markakis is slow but as fundamentally sound as they come in the OF, and not afraid of making plays near the wall.

Honestly, I think he could go on getting 160+ hits forever if he played 155+ games a year as he always has, but I don't think he's likely to be a full-time regu

No trolling.

Trading for Nick right now would be buying high.

The expression buy high sell low is an obvious riff off the expression buy low sell high.  It is also something the O's tend to do.

It had nothing to do with trading Trumbo.  I've never suggested that Trumbo had much value.

But the real reason I posted on this thread is that I think Nick is a better RF than almost anyone we are likely to start there this year..............certainly for the foreseeable future.   The Braves must have some needs.........just trying to think outside the box a little.

Outside the box?

Folks have been thinking outside that box multiple times each season since Nick signed with the Braves.

And as long as our current RF options are sucking hardcore I promise to keep thinking outside it!   :)

Nick Markakis so far:    .325/.413/.525  .938

O's Right Fielders:     .167/.222/.310   .532

I'm sure that gap will narrow quite a bit just naturally, but we'll see by how much.

Nick is climbing slowly up the hit leaderboard, up from 257 to 247 from the beginning of the year.   He’s in a tightly-packed part of the list, and conceivably could be up to 180th or so by the end of this year if he stays healthy.    Next five to pass: Carney Lansford, Chuck Klein, Scott Rolen, George Burns and Matt Holliday.

Update:

Nick has come down to Earth a bit and his line is more in line with what you might expect:

.292/.373/.417   (.790)

Amazingly enough,  our team RF numbers have fallen even further!  We were hitting a combined .532 in RF.......we're now down to:

.171/.216/271  (.488)

Seems like this shouldn't be possible.  Isn't Seth Smith still available or something?

Nick’s having a strong season so far: .302/.405/.476, 4 HR 18 RBI in 27 games through the end of April, worth 1.6 rWAR.  He also has 19 walks to 11 strikeouts.

He’s now tied for 240th in career hits.   In his next 10 hits he’ll pass Tim Wallach, Harmon Killebrew, Cesar Cedeno, Alvin Dark, Hal McRae, Harvey Kuehnn and Gary Carter.

Good bump.   Really happy for Nick, he was one of my favorite O's for a long time.  Wish him nothing but the best.........and I guess I can't help but wish too that he was manning RF for us instead........................

Speaking of which............

You guys are NEVER going to believe this.   If you thought that our team OPS by Right Fielders would bottom out at .488.........I'm surprised to inform you that you would still be wrong!

We've fallen even further since then!  

Through the first 28 games of the season the Right Fielders for the Baltimore Orioles are now hitting a combined .472.

In a way......it's almost impressive.  Can it possibly sink even further?   Stay tuned............

While on an intellectual level I was OK with the Orioles’ decision not to give Nick that fourth year, as a fan I rued his departure.    In hindsight, we have done worse than Nick in RF all four years, per Wins Above Average (which is broken down by team by position in BB-ref):

2015: O’s -1.8, Nick -0.3

2016: O’s -1.4, Nick -0.3

2017: O’s -2.0, Nick -1.4

2018: O’s -0.5, Nick +1.2

WAA is slightly different from WAR, and compares to average major league performance at a position, rather than to a replacement level player.

I did not agree with the move then and Duquette would not know a right fielder if it bit him in the you know where.   LOL.    It has been a black hole for the Os...

      Soto and Judge are both first ballot Hall of Famers when they retire.  Soto is younger than Adley, has a career bWAR over 36, and dominated the 2019 postseason as a 21 year old. Folks probably weren't paying much attention to him or the Nats back then, but he has been a force ever since being called up in 2018. And Judge...not sure why nobody else saw value in a six and a half foot man with a ton of raw power, but good for them for nailing that 32nd pick in the draft. Having these guys 2 and 3 in the lineup is such a game changer, because there is so much pressure on the opposing pitchers to not screw up with any of their other 7 hitters.  One guy you may be able to get around.  But 2.....much harder.   That being said, I do think it is more about us losing the division than anything else.  Tampa showed us last year how to keep fighting in spite of injuries. Those guys were decimated and were like a relentless swarm of bees hanging around us all the way until the last weekend.  They won 99 games with an extremely depleted pitching staff and a slew of no-name hitters who kept coming up with big hits.  We lost this division by playing uninspired, unclutch, and lame baseball for three full months.  And amazingly, we will have gone all of July, all of August, and all of September without so much as a 4 game winning streak.   Winning the season series against every division opponent for the second year in a row is something I am very happy about after years of being a doormat. I am sorry we couldn't win the division, but I am also glad to be playing next week and not sitting at home waiting to play a team on a high after winning a playoff series.

      It's game 160 tonight and we just discovered our bull pen has warts? Elias's fault, Hyde's fault - we've had ample threads of he sucks, they suck, fire him, demote him, etc.  Well we are off to the playoffs and the pen may be the reason we don't go far. And if so I doubt few on here will be surprised. It is what it is going forward with some but not necessarily significant adjustments. We play this year out with the hand we can put together - next Monday. Till then, just win one in Minnasota for the bottom line. Last night is over and IMO really didn't teach us anything we didn't already know.

      Yeah I'm all for sportsmanship but seeing 'Congratulations Yankees' at or near the top of the board is sickening, not gonna lie.  There is no high road when it comes to these clowns.  Boone's constant whining, the well-documented HP ump favoritism (I don't care if its framing or whatever, its happening, and its annoying AF), the whining about Judge getting hit on the hand while their guys constantly pitch inside including of course the Kjerstad play where they were literally cutting up on the bench as he lay prone on home plate, the ginormous payroll, the incredibly entitled fan base booing at pitches being called balls that are three inches off the plate, that stupid roll call, that stupid whistle after strikeouts, the stupid national media drooling over a Judge v Ohtani WS possibility, Nestor Cortes and his dumb mustache, the mediocre stadium that is revered simply because its called Yankee Stadium, the ridiculously short RF porch, the Soto Shuffle or whatever the hell it is. Congratulations my ass.  Screw those dudes.

      Here's the deal. I doubt anyone on the Yankee's board congradulated us last year. This year they won the East. Whippie for them. It's like saying the IRS won tax season. IF, we do anything in the playoffs, we may meet again. But there are some significant hurdles before that. And they could easily lose along the way. Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and KC are no walk in the park. I'll root for the O's to go as far as they can and that the Yankees are one and done. We are in. I hope we win one more so we play the opening round in Oriole Park. If not, we are still in and have to do what we got to do to go anywhere. Two years in a row. While the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Tampa sleep. Year two with a heck of a lot more obstacles. This may not be a WS year but we are competitive, young, and a hell of a lot classier than that bunch in the Bronx.

      The usage of Cano last night was poor, I don't even blame him really.  Yankees had 9-1-2 coming up, and Torres is well known (based on the telecast) to hit Cano well, and hit sinkers well.  He laced that hit to RF off him on Tuesday where the Yanks screwed up the baserunning.  And Soto got a hit off him that same inning.  So it was pretty predictable that these guys were going to tee off when he came in, and that's exactly what happened. Not to mention he's pitched a lot recently, and Burnes should have pitched another inning anyway.  Just baffling decisions by Hyde last night, and I'm not one to generally question those types of things.  Even if the Burnes thing was pre-ordained, the choice of Cano for that moment was terrible.
