Frederick and Delmarva Rotations (2018)

Delmarva and Frederick are going to be packed full of starters next season. Sedlock, Gonzalez, Peralta (Frederick) and Dietz (Delmarva) having to repeat those levels aren't going to help matters.

Just off the top of my head:  Harvey, Wells, Peluffo, Sedlock, Gonzalez, Peralta, Dietz, D.L. Hall, Lowther, Hanifee, Bishop, Baumann?, Fenter?. That's 13 SP for 10 rotation spots and I'm probably forgetting one or two other candidates. The biggest problem is at Frederick but Delmarva could see a logjam as well.  Lowther will be 22 in April and is probably too advanced to begin in Delmarva.

Dietz and Peralta to the pen would be my picks to unclog the jam.  Fenter may start in the pen as well to build his innings.

I'd keep Dietz and Peralta starting for now and put Gonzalez in pen.  I wouldn't count on Sedlock repeating Frederick, I bet if he finishes the season healthy he starts in AA next year.

He's going to have to be very good down the stretch for that to happen.  There isn't a whole lot of time left in the minor league season and he is sporting a 6.28 ERA.  I think it's highly unlikely that he does not repeat Frederick.

Doesn't seem to me that Gonzalez's stuff would play well in the pen.  He was strong in Delmarva last year after struggling as a 19 year old there, so he should start. Peralta really needs to work on his command and maybe two or three inning outings out of the pen will help him with that.

I guarantee Sedlock's not being judged by his ERA (his FIP is 4.30 and his xFIP is 4.12 and there are multiple positive scouting reports I've read).  I've watched Gonzalez and the only way he makes it to the majors is if his stuff plays up in the pen.  Peralta is still young for A+, he was probably placed too aggressively this year, so I'd give him another year as a starter.

Odds are that 2-3 of those guys aren't ready to start the season next year for various reasons.  Obviously I hope that's not the case.

Depending on how the season ends and how they look in ST, I could see them starting both Sedlock and Harvey in AA.  I think that would probably be a little aggressive for both, but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility either.  Either way it will be a good problem to have if we can keep everyone healthy.

How do you justify Peluffo repeating Delmarva? He's been their best starter other than Wells.

Opponents are hitting over .300 against Sedlock. Hard for me to believe that's all been bad luck. You can see he won't be judged solely by his ERA but to say he won't be judged by it at all is a little naive.

If Harvey, Sedlock, and Wells aren't considered for the Bowie rotation, who is going to fill the Bowie rotation?

I imagine several of those guys in Bowie will have to repeat because of the line between Norfolk and Baltimore.

Wells hasn't pitched in Frederick yet.    I don't think there's any chance he starts in Bowie next year, even if he is promoted to Frederick today (which he should be, IMO).

Doesn't mean he can't skip Frederick, especially if he dominates the rest of the season and has a good spring.

While we have seen that happen, it's rare, and I'd think it's highly unlikely with a 21-year old (next year) finesse pitcher who is still two years away from being eligible for the Rule 5 draft.

I agree it'd be rare, but with his dominance, I could see that being an option. But, it's a good problem to have. Especially since Akin seems to be the best pitcher in Frederick and will probably get moved up next season.
