Art, a bit of the talent produced in DC/MD - the Terps could make a move here

I'll note that the 2020 recruiting rankings have been released & the #1 player in the class is a DE from Damascus & the #6 player in the country is from Dematha. The distance from DC to Baltimore is shorter than the distance from one side of LA to the other. An extraordinarily small area that does produce the best talent in the nation & enough to win a title. The DEs from the area are unbelievable, a top 5 player in the ESPN 2018 top 100 is down to Bama/MD & PSU, another in a long line of top ranked DEs from the DM...no V needed for this post. @ArtVanDelay

If Maryland can keep this kind of talent, they'll be competing for playoff spots year in & year out.

Fear the Turtle, love the Dirk!

Take 35 miles from D.C. to Baltimore and you have the most densely populated elite talent in the country.

These are just 2015/16/17 - all within 30 minutes of one another, didn't go into Virginia. Just recruit this area and compete for titles.

I don't follow recruiting close at all. I have heard Terps have been doing well. I always thought this was not a great area for HS football. Must have changed.

It's an unbelievable area. The best areas for recruiting are the subs of DC, Atl is insanely loaded, Miami & LA. The Catholic league is as good as any in the country. If the Terps could fill a stadium up they could win titles without leaving DC/MD/VBeach. The talent at pass rusher, QB & Oline would make them tough to beat.

Chase Young/Josh Kaindoh/Keandre Jones/Terrell Hall/Anoma/Rashaun Smith/Shane Simmons are all 5 star pass rushers from the last couple classes. That's 7 freaks who can get to the QB, no fewer than 3 will go in round 1 of the NFL draft, probably more. If I included any parts of Virginia then it becomes unfair. Tennessee has a starting DE, who happens to be their most athletic player, from VA. FSU has a 5 star DE from VA - Alabama has a 5 star DE from Woodbridge  - they aren't on the list but there's no reason MD couldn't dominate recruiting in VA, or at least grab a few guys.

Decent classes in Maryland just beat up great classes from Texas.

Is this fairly new?

If so that makes a huge difference. We have a coach.

Far more resources are being invested, there's always been talent but the coaches & facilities have been upgraded. A school like Episcopal is bringing in kids from Canada which gives the area another advantage - there's a lot here. There is talk of UA creating an academy to keep kids from leaving for IMG, but with one Harbaugh in Baltimore, I'd rather it not be at St Frances.

The tidewater area has always gotten publicity for the high end talent.

The UA all American game featured 100 players in 2015, 11 were from the DC metro area (without going into VA) has more top 100 players in the 2020 class than every state but 4.

When I was growing up all you heard about was high school basketball. Dunbar in particular.

Dunbar Baltimore v Maryland. The politics of recruiting in the 80s & 90s. Few cities treated their home school worse than Baltimore treated MD. Memphis/Tennessee is similar but Knoxville isn't anywhere near memphis.

DMV hoops just put out another top 2 NBA draft pick. I love it. I wish Turg could lock up DeMatha.

Penn State used to poach the daylights out of that area and it had a lot to do with their period of dominance.

That's one reason I love MD having the chance to play them. No more taking Bowman out of Suitland - got to keep these guys home! Hopefully they can flip Mustifer if they can win 6-7. On the big ten network they were saying Dirk deserves coach of the year if MD makes a bowl game....they thought Texas was going to win by 30.

Maryland can't afford to have home night games v Michigan State with nobody in the stands. If the turtle army showed up for football like they did at Cole....oh Lordy!  I miss the ACC. The Jefferson pilot was my baby sitter growing up.

I saw Dunbar after their peak. They lost in 93 to Simon Gratz. Rasheed Wallace was on SG, Booth on Dunbar. There were 3 or 4 games that day in Towson. Johnny Unitas was there watching. St Anthony's. Bob Hurley was coach. Real good team. Wish I recalled other players.

So many pro teams in this area. I am old enough to remember Bobby Ross' good teams. I remember Boomer a little.

All the games in the 80's were close. So many painful losses.

I even remember there was talk in 90's of going after Sandusky as head coach. Thank God that never happened.

    • I like Vazquez a little bit. I don't know how much he will hit at the upper levels, but he controls the strike zone, can run a bit, and is a good defender. He's got a utility player ceiling but for a 30K 20th round pick, he looks like a very nice org guy at the very least.
    • Well, he has hasn't done anything at the major league level yet and he still has defensive issues so we don't know whether he was a good 2nd round pick or not.  I think the bat is going to play at the major league level, but I see him more as a major league regular bat, with sketchy defensive traits until he can master corner outfield. But really my comment was more on the philosophy more than anything else. Looking at that draft, there's not a lot of guys who have made it to the majors or produced much in that 3-5 rounds yet.   It's hard to find signable high school talent after the first couple of rounds unless a team can go overslot, especially now that these top players can make pretty good NIL money in college. They know they ca have a good college experience, and play in front of packed crowds for the top programs, rather than taking long bus rides to Savannah, GA to play in front of 700 people on a Tuesday night.  So we're seeing a lot more college heavy drafts. Darrel Hernaiz is the only high school drafted player outside of the first round that has made the majors from an Elias draft.  Now Mayo should be the second, but he of course was a COVID draft overslot.
    • Mike Wright?   Ouch!
    • Whenever I get excited about the first two starts a pitcher has, I just remember Mike Wright, who pitched two seven inning shutouts out of the gate.
    • This reminded me of, in the 90’s, anecdotally, every year, Mussina would have at least one outing where he’d just get absolutely SHELLED.
    • If he throws that many hittable pitches in the heart of the plate against the Yankees (or any Major League team for that matter) he is likely to get a similar result.
    • Nick Pollack's write up mentioned the BABIP, though certainly watching that performance it was the kind of performance to make you think Voros McCracken and DIPS theory is hokum. I don't think it was random variation getting pummeled there last night.     Hopefully the Angels didn't find any cues the Yankees might also be able to benefit from.
