Art, a bit of the talent produced in DC/MD - the Terps could make a move here

Game I remember the most I think was in 85. Rick Badanjek fumbled late in Penn State territory. Sport Magazine had Terps number 1, I think. First game of season.

In 85 I was 5 going to games at Navy every weekend to watch my uncle coach, go crabbing, the back to the house to watch football all day. I've watched the MD/Miami comeback 20 times in the last 5 years but didn't see it live.

So many pro teams in this area. I am old enough to remember Bobby Ross' good teams. I remember Boomer a little.

Bobby Ross & Lou Holtz got my uncle to decomit from Cinci & went well with them to W&M. Lou Holtz made an in home visit to recruit him. That was a ridiculous coaching staff.

Holtz made every team Norte Dame was playing out to be a title contender. Even Navy. It was hillarious.

Things went south fast in 86. Len died and it all fell apart.

Do you follow basketball as well? I know the Terps are being hyped.

Absolutely. Not as much as football, football is in the family so it was unavoidable. I started HS at Dematha & Morgan Wootten was close with my aunt so I got a lot of basketball growing up too.

Have you ever heard of a guy named Harold Fox? Northwestern HS, that's an Old Old Old name.

I didn't miss a Terps basketball game growing up. I love MD & Seton Hall for some reason. ?

I saw it live. Unreal. I have seen it on MASN and some other places.

I also remember watching the BC/Miami game in 1984. Classic.

My first football game ever was Miami / Maryland in 85. It was in Baltimore. Miami was loaded and won. Team was full of NFL players. Testaverde, Irvin etc.

It's amazing to see clips of LB.

I watch that 30 for 30 on NCST, all of those were Maryland boys!

No, don't know him. I don't know much of the high school game to be honest. Heard of Wooten of course.

You didn't give up on the Terps on that day?? I never think they're going to win that game & I know how the game ends.

He was unreal. Terps never got past sweet 16 with him. Have vague recollection of when they lost to Nova in 85 in tourney.

The ACC was so loaded back then.

I was 9, long time ago. We never had cable so anytime any sports was on TV it was a big deal.

We kept getting momentum. What a game.

I miss the rivalries I grew up on, even little ole Wake Forest. That pg Childress was a pain in the butt.

    • Outside of Cowser, he’s the biggest surprise of the season so far for me.
    • It’s interesting to compare the careers of McFarland and Danny Coulombe.  TJ debuted in 2013 and is 35; Danny debuted in 2014 and is 34.   TJ has appeared in 362 big league games, throwing 480.1 innings at a 4.16 ERA (101 ERA+), and has been worth -0.1 rWAR; Danny has appeared in 262 games, throwing 250.1 IP aa 3.63 ERA (114 ERA+) and has been worth  3.1 rWAR.   Going into this season, TJ had accrued 8.028 years of service and had been paid $10.5 mm; Danny had accrued 5.008 years and had been paid $5.2 mm.  So I’d say at this point that McFatland has spent more time and bern used more heavily in the majors than Coulombe, and has been better paid, even though Coulombe has been more effective.
    • I remember him from his time with the Braves when I was in Atlanta. This is from the 'Rick Camp Game' in 85.
    • I don’t think his lack of command in the early going is going to be fixed by changing roles.  Irvin typically has very good command.  He didn’t at the beginning of last year, but recovered it after a stint in the minors.  This year he’s having early problems again, but I think the reasons may be different.  He’s gained velocity and he’s added a new pitch that moves well but he hadn’t quite figured out how to command.  So, I don’t know if he’ll figure it out or not.  If he does, he could emerge a better pitcher than at any previous time in his career. In any event, he will get at least two more starts before Means is ready to return.   Hopefully he’ll make some progress, but he’s likely to find himself in the bullpen when Means returns regardless.
    • Irvin is probably the most frustrating pitcher on this team right now. He has good velocity and good movement, but consistently misses his targets by a foot or two. Monday night the Twins hit a number of missiles that by luck or pluck didn't fall in, but a better team would have probably put up a touchdown against him. I think Irvin would have more success out of the pen, throwing as hard as he can for 20 pitches, rather than as a starter where he has to hold back a little so as to eat innings. Of course that's not going to resolve his problems with lack of command, but at least he'd be in a position to do less damage out of the BP than by starting every fifth day.
    • As some people have noted on the Holliday thread, a quick release can help make up for less than a rocket arm and he's quick and has good hands.  Seems to work well with Gunnar too.
    • He’s been murdering a lot of balls.  99th percentile in average exit velocity, 97th in hard hit rate.  He’s been a little unlucky, with a .331 xOBA, .361 xwOBA going into last night.
