Why not just leave Hardy on the 60 day for the rest of the year?  Or DFA him?  Faulkner probably isn't anything special but it makes no sense to DFA him for Hardy.

Obliviously Beckham is the starting shortstop and obviously the option on Hardy will be declined but it would be pretty cold not to allow Hardy to be on the roster if he is healthy and wants to be part of the team with expanded rosters..

After being named as a Oriole's representative in the Arizona fall league, the team risks losing him.  I don't think it's a big deal but it does make it seem like the team doesn't have a plan.

Injuries changed the plan as often happens.

The plan was to leave Hays in the AA playoffs.  But Gentry was injured.   They needed Faulkner's 40 man roster spot for Hays.  Aquino who was DFAd for Hays was going to be DFA anyway.  Hays was just added before Hardy.    If Hays had stayed in AA, Faulkner would probably still be on the 40 man roster.

Faulkner cleared waivers and was outrighted to Norfolk.  So there was likely an insider's agreement among teams to allow for end of the season roster manipulation without teams claiming each other's.

Or more likely no other team wanted to put Faulkner on their 40 man roster.

Left-handed starting pitching who have put up fairly good numbers at AAA no matter how flawed are often found on 40man rosters.  I tend to think that GMs all want flexibility with the roster expansion and have a gentleman's agreement about not going after each other's.

Yesterday the Giants claimed Engelb Vielma, a shortstop who was DFAed by the Twins.
